View Full Version : noise dampening material
i'm looking for some noise dampening material to line the door on my anteck sx1030b case. I'm thinking something about a 1-1.5 cm thick. flame resistant material would be a plus.
please post links if you have em
thanks.

Dynamat is NOT good for airborne vibrations, only physical contact ones. You don't want to use it for dampening the noise. Go to foamorder.com and order some Ester foam. It's anti-static acoustic foam used in studios for airborne vibrations, and will help with noise from fans, hdd's, etc. unlike dynamat which only would dampen noise from the case panels vibrating from airborne noise (Ester would do that as well since it adds mass). To line my entire Antec 1040b case with it costs $28.02 according to their site (you specify custom cut measurements/shapes) :).

Hey, I have that same case.......have you modded yours? Do you think you could post some pics?

I haven't modded anything yet. I'm planning on doing watercooling and a few other mods in a month or so. I'll post pics of everything once I do :). I'm going to build a big (probably 2.5 feet by 2.5 feet) wooden cube case in June or so, maybe earlier (I need to learn how to use all of the tools well :D). I can't wait to do that :).
If you can't fit the Ester foam into your case, using plain cork and lining your case with it reportedly works pretty well. It's cheap, so it's worth trying, perhaps in combo with Ester foam for even more silencing and case-weighting (black labs like to knock cases over :)).

At last I see somebody has mentioned corc. I bought lot of it, at hardware shop I saw sign on it that it will absorb sound ca 16dbl. But didn't yet dare to put it into my case as everybody here is speaking about shelleg and dynamat etc...
What would be good glue to use, so that it will stick well to metal? Will normal corc glue work, as it is good to remove it -just wash with water and it is gone :D
There's a hobby glue in a spray can, that works very well. Try a crafts shop. It's not easily removable as it's more like rubber cement than anything, but I imagine it could be done.

In spray can? It meanst that my room will stink later like "²§${³fg"§!!!!
Yes it sprays, but not like spray paint. It won't spray a very wide pattern and go all over the place.
It will smell, so I'd do it in the driveway, wait 5 minutes, then take it inside. It smells like rubber cemement too.
Florida shouldn't be too bad outside right now. At least there's no snow...

Heh, Florida, nope my friend. Actually in Munich in Germany. And there is lot of snow outside right now and it is deamn cold. I guess it is the climate what overclockers like most!
This FL means actually Fantasy Land. I am using it in some other board. I guess I were just lazy to type it out correctly here:confused:
Mmm, but would like to be in Florida right now:cool:

Foamorder.com sells foam glue that will work on metal.
I think I'm going to order some of this Ester foam.

But still, corc is good one to choose? Will it work. I mean don't want to stick it first to my case and then discover that there is no use of this. I don't want to make my pc very heavy -don't want to add these heavy rubber door pads. I have to move my case quite often. Has anybody experiences with plain corc?

Make sure you tell us what you think of it.
I am also very interested and was thinking of ordering some too...

I actually lined my case with scraps of carpet pad. Its a pretty high quality, very dence, and it has a diamond pattern on it so it looks pretty good, even though its green, but it was free.

Hey guys for all things you can rely on RS (http://www1.rswww.com)
They have 3 categories under "Sound Absorption/Insulation":
Sound Absorption Sheeting
Sound Damping Sheet
Sound Insulation Sheeting
(I won't try and link these cos RS links never work!)

Sound Absorption Sheeting, Polyurethane Foam
T.Mat Engineering
A comprehensive range of sound absorption and insulation sheeting with a choice of fill materials and facings. The fill materials offer excellent absorption/insulation to sound with the facing offering protection to the ingress of dust, moisture and resistance to chemicals. Can be used in sheet or cut to required shape. All sheets have a self adhesive backing for the option of easy fixing to machinery/equipment
Fill Materials
Polyurethane foam-absorbs sound across a broad frequency range. A good basic solution for all reflected and reverberated noise. Suitable as a bearing foam for interior trim and seating applications. Typical uses: panels around machinery engine rooms and close fit canopies
Non combustible polyurethane foam- as above, but for use in high risk fire areas
Polyester fibre-excellent acoustic absorption combined with good thermal insulation properties
PVF sound barrier mat-a mineral loaded sound barrier causing sound energy to be converted to heat. This barrier reduces structural vibration and airborne sound transmission
Facing Materials
Aluminised film-metalised polyester film for oxygen and moisture barrier. Typical uses: pump enclosures and engine room
Black polyurethane film-offers high abrasion resistance, flexibility, resistance to oils, gases and solvents. good resistance to weather/radiation energy and liquids. Protective backing to elastomers/foams to stop the ingress of dust and soiling
Tedlar®- a poly vinyl fluoride facing resistant to chemicals, solvents and staining which is flexible, with an outstanding temperature range of -73°C to 107°C. Suitable for very hostile conditions

Do these sound dampening materials insulate the case (Make it hotter) a lot? Just wondering cause heat is an issue to me.
I am almost suprised that no one mentioned what I thought would be an obvious sound deadener for a computer...old mousepads! They actually work very well...:D

Mmmm, for example I don't have dozens mouse pads laying around....

Well, if you have no case fans, then yes, it will make it hotter. Use the analogy ofa house though, you can have the best insulation available, but if your windows are all wide open its gona get cold, PERIOD.

I have this stuff Could I use this?
what you have there is commonly referred to as egg crate foam, and yes, you can use it. They use that stuff to insulate radio station walls, and sound studios...should work pretty well...

Okay thanks But were is a good spot in my case to put it. top or bottom?
dude, you can put it anywhere in your case...top, bottom, sides, wherever...putting any sound dampening material in your case WILL raise your temps a little, though, so watch your monitors for the rise...if you have enough of that stuff, I say cover as much as you can with it, and with good airflow, you will have a MUCH quieter case...:D

Would the ester foam be better than this stuff? They mention neoprene for further insolation of walls, its more expensive than the ester... would it block sound better?

What kind of a difference in noise can I expect if I use sound dampening foam? With 4-34cfm case fans, and a 80mm tornado?

I recommend Akasa noise pad, it looks nice and they cut the size to fit computer already. I would give it a try.
i have my entire case line'd with Aska's PAX mate, http://www.svc.com/sounddampening.html ,and it works good...
now, it doesn't kill the noise but there is a noticeable difference and its now more like a low humming..
2 vantec tornado's and 2 120mm 105cfm fans :O i need like 2 layers probably! lol
