The temp probe no longer works? Basically, I would usually trim the plastic very carfully around the end of the probe so there's just a tiny amount on the end, then I would butt that against the SIDE of the processor die (not on top or you'll insulate the die from the heatsink). I then would use a small piece of scotch tape to hold the probe against the side of the die...
I'll make a meager attempt to illustrate.

Ack! that didn't work too well, oh well, I hope you got the basic idea.

exactly... Thanks a lot killorbe, I have nothing to illustrate with at work... :(
Oh well.
Thanks again!

In trimming back the excess plastic at the tip, if you nick the thermistor, it may no longer work. Likewise, if you mash it too hard between the HSF base and the CPU substrate, it may not work. I nicked one ever so slightly and though it works, it has become intermittent. They are touchy. The biggest liability comes from mounting and unmounting the HSF a lot.

Dill a hole into the baseplate from the side until you are over the core, embed the probe in that. This is the AMD and intel rec. way of reading temps btw and it works fine.
