View Full Version : Do I need to segregate jumbo frame gigabit from 100baseT?

Ok, so I'm upgrading my network finally to gigabit ethernet. I just picked up a 16 port ethernet switch with jumbo frame (9k) support. I will be purchasing some gigabit ethernet nic's (PCI).

I use a 4 zone system, green, blue, red, green.

The IPCOP box will have the red connecting to the internet via a 100baseT card (I have a 6 mbit connection, so that's overkill). My Gentoo boxes will all be upgraded to gigabit ethernet. Some other family members' Windows PC's will remain on 100baseT until they feel like buying their own gigabit ethernet cards, and the printer will be 100baseT.

My concern is that when I set the MTU size in Gentoo to 9k, the computers will have trouble talking to the 100baseT computers or to the printer (which is a 100baseT also). Is this likely to be a serious problem, and if so, what is the best way around it?

I definitely want to use jumbo frames... way too slow to use 1500 MTU's. I have a lot of data moving around my internal LAN.

I doubt the switch can translate from a 9k MTU to 1500 MTU's. The IPCOP box probably will have no trouble.
