Just got my wrt54gl all set up and running with tomato and am trying to broadcast the wifi across a small courtyard in the front yard. default setting for transmit power is 42mW and from what i read in the wiki a setting of 84mW is safe(?), the power can be set to 251mW but I'm gonna bet this is not a wise move.

I've currently set the router to 84 and its broadcasting just fine, but my question is is it really a safe setting. I know jacking extra power into any device can shorten the life but is there anything i should have my eyes on while doing this.

also if anyone has any experience in these settings id like to hear your success/failing(i hope not) stories.

I've done much higher with no damage so that should be fine.

In DD-Wrt 70 is considered safe according to help. I wasn't playing with for while since I am happy with the result. In prior firmware when I was setting more, don't remember to what, I got problems. It didn't cause any damage to the router, it just pages were not displaying or displaying slower than usual. Anyways, not every router will behave the same.
