Can This unsanitary Internet be Real?

I was searching the web for an alternate isp and found this http://www.google.com/tisp/install.html. I don't think I would ever try it but is this a hoax or is this a real thing. I hope it isn't real it seems a little unsanitary.

OK good I'm glad its a fake. You know the real funny thing is there were probably thousands of people who signed up for it 'cause it said "free".

While it was an April Fool's joke, it isn't very far-fetched. There is at least on European company deploying fiber-optic in sewers. The infrastructure is already there, no need for digging and rewiring and dodging other lines, just run the fiber down an already-existing pipe. Would probably be an effective method in the U.S., too, if AT&T and Comcast were prevented from lobbying.
