View Full Version : Small fish in your water cooling setup?

I was thinking, maybe very small fish can eat the alge and other organisms in ur water cooling system? Has anybody tried it? Ethyle-Glycol is toxic, so maybe you can can use small animals. Plus it may look nice. Recycle water to keep temperature constant.
Although I have pondered about this myself I really don't think that it would be a good idea. The algae doesn't really build up fast enough to keep the fish fed and then you also would need to have a large fish tank in the loop. How would you keep their poop from entering the cooling portion of the loop? Also The temperatures would fluctuate in the tank and fish are kinda sensitive to that as well. It would be interesting to see it work at some point or another.

U can put poop-eating fish in there for compensation. Many people have large fish-tanks, so you may think of the big tank as as a thermal reservoir (no major change in temps).
Warning...don't put Piranahs or small sharks...they will eat ur tubes

Not a good idea. It would heat the water to unacceptable levels for the fish and the biologics would mess up the loop. Fish poo and food decompose with microorganisms to form nitrites, which then react with other microorganisms to make nitrates, which makes great plant food. And I don't know how the microorganisms, nitrite and nitrates would react with the copper of the waterblock either.

you know you want to try this... Even if he only makes it around the loop one time and then gets stuck in the rad... He would go down in history!
What kind of fish would you suggest? And for the poop eater fish what about it's own poop? Surely it doesn't eat it's own or does it just hold it? Some how I don't see this happening.
As far as I know, animal rights groups don't object to our hobby here. How about not changing that?

Lol this is great. The concept of a water loop is to remove heat from a computer, why introduce a temperature sensitive entity to it? How would you feed it? And all the other things mentioned.
It's neat that you are being creative, this just isn't realistic in the end for many reasons.

LMAO you could always put a filter in in your tubes so the fish poo wont go to the block and so the fish wont get sucked in :P come on man pt nuke thats all you need end of story lol

no the water moves way to fast. the impeller of the pump would turn the fish into a liquid, or break the pump.
nothing in your water loop should be alive. period

Do they sell small diapers?

I dont know man..though somebody hardcore here tried it...I see people playing with liquid N2 etc...fish seems easier...

Now this may be a problem...any ideas on how to get the fish to avoid being smashed by the pump?

No... no ... no....
You guys have it ALL WORNG !
What you do....
Get a WC set up - blocks just the way you want.
Maybe an open NB block so the little guys don't get stuck.....
Oh wait... wrong thread... not the torture little animal thread.... :o
All you need is a Clear Lexan Res.
Put "screens" over the inlet & outlets
Hell ... use an airator too !
Wait a mintue here......
Submersible pump & attached fish tank. :D
Use warm water fishes & call it good.
Sardines anyone?

If u open waterblock, there is leakage and ur computer will explosion. Maybe u have experiance in this? I can call u Mr.Exploder if u wish

ROFL! That's great........assuming the little guys can swim against the current and not get all stuck on the screen, lol. I gotta admit WII, this made me laugh :santa:

Would be more interesting to have a small reservoir inside of a larger reservoir, completely separating the two groups of water. Store the fish inside the large reservoir and the loop water inside the smaller reservoir.

i think the ban (permanent or semi) hammer needs to come out....

No, the ban hammer doesn't need to come out, but this thread has outlived it's usefulness.

You might be onto something with this one.
