That is the noise one of our hard drives started making the other day whenever we try to boot it up. It is making a new noise that I have never heard before. After making that noise a few times, the BIOS reports a 'disk error'. ****.

I really want to rescue all the music and photo's we have organized on there. It's a Maxtor 160 GB drive. I bought two of the same model at the same time from Newegg like 4 years ago. I have been toying with the idea of physically swapping the platters from the broken drive to the other one.

It's risky for sure! I have no faith in the remaining 160GB drive, so I don't care about destroying it. If I succeed, I get bragging rights for a long time. If I fail, then no big deal as it was kind of obvious I would fail, right?

What are my chances of success?

Unless you are in a clean room I would say you have a 10% chance of success if you are optimistic. :/

You will have no success with moving the platters so not even worth trying.

Your best bet is to get a USB enclosure and try to access it like that. If that doesnt work, put it in the freezer for a couple hours then try again. Your only other option is probably sending it away to get the data recovered.

you will have a better chance of fixing your hard drive with thermite then fixing it by swapping out the platters
