i have 2 3870 x2, planning to get 1 4870 x2. which do you think is better? should i get 4870 x2 or keep my cf 3870 x2?
If you can afford the x2 and your cpu\power supply are good enough then that's what I'd do. I wouldn't bother without a 4ghz+ penryn though.

cpu - q9450
psu - antec 1000w truepower quattro

Well i would think you would see a decent bump in most areas. Just make sure your cpu is overclocked well 3.2 and up would be best. Your power supply should be ok also.
Take my suggestion with a grain of salt since i don't know the exact performance difference between the 2 options. It just seems more likely to me that you'd gain performance since you get massive diminishing returns for every extra gpu you add. Plus the x2 is supposed to be free of microstutter and each core is almost twice as fast as a 3870 unless I'm mistaken. Add to that the fact that you'll have double the usable video ram and it makes sense to me.

so basically it means its worth upgrading from two 3870 x2 to one 4870 x2 if I have sufficient cpu and psu?
by the way, thanks for input guys!

if you can power two 3870x2 cards you will be able to power one 4870x2

well i dont think i can get 4870 x2 anymore, maybe (for now) ill just stick on my dual 3870 x2. so i need your help guys, is there any chance i can get 20+++ score in 3dmark06? currently my score is 17+++. hitting the wall at 3.5ghz:bang head. any suggestion to push more my cpu clock? Vcore is already 1.369

Also depends on what resolution you are gaming at. Unless you are 1900x1200 or above, you likely won't see a difference between the two... except maybe in Crysis lol.

I just don't think it's possible to hit 20k with that setup. Sorry to tell yea =(

With the exception of possibly the 3DMARK benches at default resolutions, the 4870x2 should be quicker than your dual 3870x2's at higher resolutions in real world applications, ie...gaming.

I agree, not possible, not even with the 4870x2 overclocked. My PC with a 4.2GHz dual core and slightly overclocked 4870x2 gets just over 19,400. I really don't even bother with the default resolutions anymore though, if you're not benching at 1680x1050 or 1920x1200, they might as well be useless since no one plays games at lower resolutions anymore and if you do, I believe a 8800GT or 8800GTS 512MB would suit you just fine. The 4870x2 wasn't created for 1280x1024.

What kind of cooling are you using on your CPU?
The key is going to be keeping that cpu cool enough to handle a few more volts so you can get the clocks higher that way you won't be bottlenecking the 3870X2s as much...

@rdrash,
im using the swiftech apogee gt,
idle temp: stock/oc 3.5Ghz 32-36/35-39.
load temps: 51-59 oc'd
i tried pushing my cpu to 3.6ghz with 1.38v but after the windows logo shows, my computer freeze. so it means need more V right? im afraid to hit 1.4V. here's some screenie; btw, im only using single card with this shot.
