That's correct. Any of the XFi with front panel or optical interface will work.

The AuzenTech XFI Prelude is a great card for home theatre. Have used one of these with a surround home theatre setup and can say the sound quality is superb.

It's a real premium sound card. Without doubt the best X-Fi based card on the market. It's arguable as to whether the Asus Xonar or AuzenTech Prelude has better sound quality, however the Prelude does offer full DTS + Dolby support over coaxial or fibre outputs.

I've personally never heard anything sound so good. I'd rate it over my Xonar DX for home theatre. Mind you, its a more expensive card too.

No different dude. Had someone ask exactly the same question in regard to DVI vs HDMI. The same asnwer applies with audio. You won't notice any difference.

The only difference you'll notice is two cables vs 1 cable.

Details of the Prelude:- http://www.auzentech.com/site/products/x-fi_prelude.php

mjw21a i dont mean to bash on you but iv heard the diff between a hdmi and optical on my home theater system and i have to admit it sounds alot more crisp and less distortion at high volumes but

i dont know if the same will apply with a computer since i would think a dedicated soundcard will produce alot better sound than a gfx card.... i kinda like the idea of one cable though haha

Cant say I'd recommend using nVida or ATI's HDMI for audio thanks dude. If you're going to do it, get the HDMI extension for the sound card. Then again, this begs the question as to whether Gfx would suffer.

Personally I'd use coaxial or optical for my audio. On the system I installed the Prelude on, I simply used HDMI for the plasma screen (it didnt have DVI) and optical into the amp. Sounded great.

yea i guess ima buy a soundcard but 200 bucks for the sound card bro is it really worth it?..i mean its almost the price of another 4870 lol...i dont need the 7.1 since i only have a 5.1 setereo but **** i would hate to spend money twice when i want to upgrade to 7.1 since my yamaha amp supports 7.1 ;)

I think those enthusiast would agree on est juli (http://www.esi-audio.com/products/julia/). You will need an amplifier though. Thankfully, your receiver does that, I think.

Edit- they may not be the best but better than auzen prelude/asus's card. NOTE: I did some research on this. I do not have one an I am not liable for any wrong information.

Hmmm, I might need to look into one of those. Looks good for audio editing/production stuff. :D

Will need to see if available in Australia first though.

You can hear in digital? :-/ I highly doubt you can hear a difference between HDMI and optical, youre just passing 1s and 0s to your receiver to be converted to analog audio. If you take DDL out of the mix, any sound card with a digital out will sound the same played on the same home theater setup...as all digital (data) to analog (sound) conversion is being done by your receiver.
