A friend of mine recently found some random person on ICQ who is giving her technical advice. ~shudder~

Whoever this person is, my friend has been advised to buy something called a "V80" PC card for her laptop. Once she has spent that money, she is given to understand that any ISP that supports this "V80" protocol will give her near DSL performance for less of a monthly fee than she is paying for her current dial-up service.

For whatever it is worth, this was related to me verbally over dinner and she may be talking about something else but this is what I have to work with.

What might this protocol be and can someone please tell me why it is even useful?

Are you sure he/she didn't mean V.90? It's a 56k modem protocol, but performance, while the best for modems, is not as good as dsl. That's all I know.

here is what I found on a google news search

V.80 is a standard that allows H.324 videoconferencing software to treat any
asynchronous modem connection as a synchronous channel. Bottom line? If you
are going to support a point-to-point videoconferencing setup with your PC,
you need it. If you are dialing an ISP, you don't.

V80 is built into Zoom modems (www.zoom.com) like the 3025L i is a V92 modem that supports modem on hold! I use it, its great!! ;)

V80 is for use on video conferencing and speach, and has nothing to do with ICQ!! ;)
