If I want to put 512 MB on the Asus A7V266e mobo, will a single stick of 512 MB RAM work better that two sticks of 256, all else being equal?

I would guess 2x256mb. the 512mb sticks tend to not do as well.

You can check what is recommended by this place for your board.

The 512 stick will be better. It will be more stable.

I guess there are two opinions here but I think that one stick would be better for stability.

Yes its really hard to say.
If it were 2x128 vs. 1x256 there would be no doubt 1x256.

The 512mb crucial uses 64x64 chips and the 256mb 32x64 chips.
So the 512mb's higher density chips will make it a little slower than the 256mb.

Then there is the tradeoff of using 2x256 sticks and having the extra impedance of the traces.
