Trying to set up a wired /wireless network. My computer is wired, connected to a linksys router. The roomate has a linsys usb adapter. It shows she is connected to the router but can get no internet. What gives?:bang head
(Both XP machines)

well the wires in the tin of pistachios is a good first bet.
otherwise, id say it sounds like a DNS.
if you can get a AIM/messenger type program to connect (dont need dns for that) you havnt got the right DNS.
(in other words its a red herring - router config)

try and ping an internet ip via command prompt from her machine.
a valid ip that is pingable is 212.58.224.131
if this works, then you have www connectivity and its a dns issue as stated before.
if you cannot ping that ip i said above, make sure you have a default gateway set and its valid on your network eg your router.
if the gateway is blank, make sure her ip address is not 169.254.x.x
good luck :)
What type of security are you using, wpa, wpa2

Well. I have everything set up on her machine w/ same ip, dns etc.
Her adapter shows 4 of 5 bars on connectivity.
Her computer shows that she has an internet connection.
Yet I can't ping.
Could it be the wall its going through?
Shouldn't you be getting a DHCP address from your router instead of setting the same IP & dns?
Check the firewall and see if it is configured correctly on that connection. (just fixed a persons connection and that was the issue)

you can't have two identical ips on the same network! increment the last number in the octet by one. eg. if yours is 192.168.1.2, make hers 192.168.1.3.
leave Subnet Mask, DNS and gateway the same as on your machine(if your inet access works that is, if you can't you have other problems)

what cant you ping? did you even read my post? :bang head
if you cannot even ping your gateway then there is your problem..
is her pc DHCP or have you manually inputted the ip information?
if you are unclear of anything that i have typed, let me know and ill explain further. :)
the basic fundamentals of internet connectivity are, you must have a valid default gateway set or else you will not reach any internet site,**following irrelevant** beyond your home network (more specifically its subnet).
the best thing is let dhcp issue all ip info.
can you do me a favour and use command prompt on her machine, do a ipconfig /all and save that print screen to a usb device so you can upload here and we can take a look at whats going on?
ive subscribed to this topic so i can reply

i dont think he has done this, because usually both machines will not work but not always..
but if he cannot even ping his gateway then this suggests that the wireless connects, but windows is refusing to let anything pass because of a duplicate ip.. but a message box pops up to inform you of this, so we'll see...

Have you tried a hard reset on the router, modem, and both pcs. if the computer shows connection but devices aren't connecting, sometimes a restart helps, I had to hard reset everything on my new DSL setup.

The ip address is different by one digit @ the end. The (I use open DNS) is the same. The intenet page wants to load real bad but just won't.
Lets kinda slow down here. I really appreciate everyone trying to help.
I will have access to the computer later when she goes to work.
Sorry for the confusion I may have caused.

if you follow a process, you will find a solution.
before you can get a pc to open webpages, you need to check some things.
its like trying to get to number five by counting 1,2,5..
forget the dns for a minute. dns doesnt determine if you have outside access or not..
can you post back the ip configuration of her machine, and of your machine and we can go from there

i agree.
and don't hard reset the modem as suggest above, that will cause more pain to begin with (loosing you login details for the net connection etc).
I'll leave it with you ppe1700. GL guys.
