View Full Version : New Xbox on the way...
http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=491
Edit: Huh, for some reason the link doesnt go where it should now. Hopefully they will fix it.
Even more interesting they took it off their RSS feed completely. I wonder why?
In any event a quick glance stated it would be out sometime in 2009, unless i read wrong.

Is it an actual next gen system or is it just a 360 with a larger hard drive and/or blu-ray player? I didn't see much about it in the link above.
I didnt get a chance to read it in depth before they pulled it. You dont see it in the link because they yanked it for some reason.
What I did see is it will have an HDMI connection on all the models.

It's bogus. Microsoft is touting the 360 as "NEW" once the Nov dashboard update hits that changes the interface from the blades to the Home/Mii ripoff setup.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/14/microsoft-giving-the-xbox-360-a-totally-new-dashboard/
60GB HDD will be out then and MAYBE the 65nm GPU shrink by then.
There really is no "NEW" console, just a major refresh. Although being able to do game installs will be nice.
Ok, I will go skulk off into the shadows again for a few months........

Well, that was what the andantech article was labeled as.. "New Xbox coming" and from the glance it didnt look like a regular 360 revamp.

For the record, my Offical X-Box magazine cover this month also said "Brand New X-Box" or something like that. Believe me, it's pure marketing.

I may be wrong, but would anandtech have an extensive article about a revamp? Also, if it was just a revamp, why would they pull the article right after putting it up?

Hard to say. Official X-Box magazine may have had permission to due a full write up since they are under the MicroSoft's wing and they may have put the kaibash on Anandtech.
MS showed it off at E-3 but OXM is the only source I've seen with a full and detailed presentation.
A new MicoSoft console is coming no sooner than 2010. There may be several revamps along the way with hard drive sizes, die shrinks and perhaps even footpad shrinks but there will be no new consoles from MS, Sony or Nintendo until AT LEAST 2010 but you will probably see revamps on everything from the DS to the PS3 maybe even frequently, hell the 3rd PSP revamp in 2 years is coming out next month.

In the article about RROD I posted in another thread they mentioned this 360 update.
By next year at the earliest, Microsoft is scheduled to launch a new iteration of the Xbox 360 with a board dubbed Valhalla. That board will have a single chip that combines both the graphics chip and microprocessor on a single device. This is the kind of technical tour de force that Sony achieved with the chips for the PlayStation 2, a move that allowed the company to significantly reduce manufacturing costs. Right and that was what I was saying above, that is a revision or refresh and by no means a "new" console. Just as the several revisions of the PS2 and PSP are not "new consoles" The DS and the DS-Lite are not different consoles, the DS-Lite is just a refresh/revision.

I'm still deciding on a 360/ps3, I'm afraid to get one cause I know I'm going to hit the button and 30 seconds later read an article about the new pwnage console coming out in a few months.

Honestly you can't go wrong either way. The 360s RROD issues seem to be hammered out and the PS3 has virtually the same library now as the 360 with a few exclusive exceptions. I'm a console fanatic and I believe that in 2 or so years when the next systems come out that I am going to pick the one with the best tech specs and go with that one and that one only. The 360 is $100-$200 cheaper than the PS3 depending on the version you go with but you get no Blu-Ray player. If you want to watch High-Def movies get the PS3, if not then same some green and get a 360.

Don't forget about Xbox LIve!
If you want to watch High-Def movies AND not have to pay for yearly online services... go with the PS3.

Yeah, was thinking of the PS3 for the Hi def movies, simply because it's an extra $60 for the hd-dvd drive for the xbox plus its small library. But enough of the thread jack. As long as this is just a revamped 360 and not the xbox 720 I may get a system now.

You can be assured that the only hardware changes will be in die shrinks or footprint and the "OMG it is so new and improved" is the dashboard upgrade that is competing with HOME and Miis. So I guess you can say that MS's new interface is good for HOMEMIIS (Homies)......

I think the standard models to compare is the 60Gb Xbox360 at $299 to the 80Gb PS3 at $399. Even though PS3 may look more expensive, it gives you more than what the Xbox360 provides. You get blu-ray, wireless, 20 Gb more storage, and PSN. With Xbox360, it's an additional $50 a year for Xbox live, no blu-ray, lousy DVD player (even a $40 Apex does a better job), and $100 for wireless adapter.

As far as game library, Xbox do have more games, and PS3 is catching up. As for exclusive titles, I really don't think there will be too many "true" exclusive with 3rd party developers. I think most of them are just pretty much "time" exclusive. The only true exclusive titles out there will be published by Microsoft, and Sony themselves.

Correct, with EA and Activision taking over, well everybody, only SONY and MS themselves will produce exclusives and I really can't think of anything off the top of my head that is a killer-app by wither one. I mean, it should almost be a given that Mass Effect 2 will be available for the PS3 also, right?

Hmmm who knows. We know that it will be on the 360, eventually move its way to the PC. For PS3 just depends on the developers really if they want to code for it really, or there publisher decides to really push for it. But with a successful game like that don't know how much the publisher would have on controlling the developer.

Yeah, I meant that as a joke but had to change it. Not by a Mod's request or anything, I just got to thinking that Jesus probably has a sense of humor and I'm probably going to hell anyway but no use in purposely being blasphemous.

If you think Jesus has a humor, you should check out the episode in Family Guy, where Stewie went back in time to Nazereth, and saw Jesus taking a shower.
