View Full Version : SMP Client Only Runs One Instance
So i decided to switch back to folding for a while after getting a couple quad core systems. I followed the sticky on setting up the beta smp client supposedly targeted at quad core chips. The installation went smoothly but it only runs once instance, leaving my system with 3 idle cores. I was sort of expecting this to work like boinc in terms of taking advantage of multi-cores, but does this still have to be setup manually, i.e. making copies and starting them separately to get all 4 cores folding?

TC yes that is what to do
i.e. making copies and starting them separately to get all 4 cores folding?
Just make sure to give each one dif machine ID [1], [2], [3],[4] ect

Did you download the right client? It sounds like you downloaded the classic single core client, in which case you'd need 4 separate folders and run 4 instances each with the machine IDs set as stated above.
The one you want is either of the last two in the list on the betas page:

If you did download one of those packages, then all u may need is the -smp switch at startup.
I followed the sticky that says "updated for new SMP client!" and downloaded the client using the links in the article.
Sounds to me as if you forgot to add the -smp flag to the extra parameters or the target line of the shortcut. Oops, drshivas said that already and he is right.

Which are you wanting to use the Deino or MPICH
if using the Deino Client just remember to set Flags -smp -deino -verbosity 9
and for the MPICH just the -smp -verbosity 9
The client is running with -smp -deino -forceasm -verbosity 9

stop your client
open your config file and add -smp
close your config file
DELETE the work folder , the queue.dat file and the download core FAH***.exe file
start the fah.exe again see what it downloads.
what mine looks like

Okay I tried that and all it did was download a new core and start running again with one instance.

it did that for me, and then like a day later, i ahd the a1 core going..... is weird...
can you show us your config file?
Well this is really strange. I went to copy and paste my config file in here and it's almost completely empty. The last time I checked it last night it looked identical to what Mr G posted. Now all it has is this:
[settings]
machineid=1
[http]
active=no
What the heck is it doing?

What the heck is it doing?Did you change the machine ID when you installed it? I had a very similar issue with the GPU client. If I changed the machine ID from the default "2", it completely wiped out my config file. I'd nuke the entire folder and start over honestly...

check task manager and report back how many FahCore_XX.exe are running and what core is it.

Currently running 1 instance of core 78. I think I'll just hose the entire thing and start over.

ok, then you are running standard/single core client, not SMP. make sure you did put -smp flag; otherwise you'll be assigned for regular/non SMP WU.

i went through this run around for almost a week, geting core 73 and the 85? i think..
i deleted everything
do an uninstall - reboot to stp the smpd thing, then go into your c drive and delete the F@H folder completly - redownload - install
when you install it and it asks if you want to change advance options choose yes
leave everything default... exacept for
MachineID - make it 2 (this is wht i did as i have the gpu client)
advance tags type in -smp 4
then finish and start it up!
