I'll definatly say Athlon all the way baby it's much more cost effective.

Fifth vote for AMD, and first vote for posting in the right forum! This would actually be best served under "General Hardware." Some members prefer to completely avoid General Discussion, so you'd probably get more answers in General Hardware. But you're new here, so try and take this a constructive criticism, okay?

Like I said, you're very new here, so it's not expected to be a perfect member right out of the gate. All of us had to start somewhere, right?

As for the AMD, they are much cheaper and tend to outperform the PIVs, but they do run hotter, so just make sure you have a good cooler on it. The front page has a listing (http://www.overclockers.com/articles373/) of many heatsinks and how they perform. I would acutally recommend the Millennium Thermal Glaciator 2. (http://millennium-thermal.com) I had a friend drop 16*C with it, from some crappy heat sink.

'nother for AMD
currently if you went by PR and Mhz for Athlon XP 2000+ and PIV 2Ghz the athlon is $100 cheaper for a mobo-CPU combo on pricewatch and out performs the PIV

$100 could go toward getting better video, sound, bigger HDD, more ram, a better monitor or you could do what I did Watercool.:p

How important is quiet?
If thats a priority then it can cost a lot to get an AMD system quiet and maybe eat up all the money you save: Athlons, even XPs, run pretty hot. A case with good cooling is important.

If noise is not an issue then you can't beat AMD for the money, period.
If it is......well, I'd have to dissent and go with Intel!

Well if you have lots of bills in your pockets and you don't really care about a costive machine, then the Northwood 1.6 as sites have already overclocked that thing to 2.6 gig easily.
Its about 160 or somewhat near there for that chip and it is an excellent combination for crunching seti to maximum game play w/ a good video card.

If you want to save cash and use your cash for performance and cheap money, go AMD.
