View Full Version : Should I return my 9800GTX+ in favor of a GTX260?

About a week ago I bought an evga 9800GTX+ from frys.
But I cringe every time I drop to sub 10fps in supreme commander :(
So I am considering returning it and upgrading to the 260.
And hopefully sometime in the next 90 days step up to the 280 when prices drop.

Is there really enough of a difference between the 9800 and 260 to justify the ~70$ increase?

Thanks,
Joseph K.

if you are going to move to another nVidia card go for the 9800gx2.

SupCom is just about the only graphically intensive CPU bound game.

Get a quad.

Yea, I doubt it is the graphics card. My 8800GTX can play it full bore. It is probably your CPU. What resolution are you trying to play at, I played it at 1680x1050. Although, I don't currently have it installed, so cannot check specifics.

er, on an e8400 I doubt the CPU is a problem... ?

You're not using that at stock speed, right?

get that e8400 up to 4ghz and you should be good to go, no need to update the gfx card =p

i just ditched 2 9800gtx,s for a single 260.

there about equal in game play the 260 is still smoother and you can upgrade to a second 260 and be future proof for a while.

I play at 1920 x 1200 with the settings on high and 2x AA
The cpu is up to 3.75 and the memory is running at the stock 800mhz.
I plan to purchase it from frys so the gx2 is out.
The 260 is $300 but paying a bit more for it now doesn't bother me since I will hopefully be stepping up to a gtx 280 if the prices drop a bit.

So the main question is would it be worth the switch from one to the other.
And judging from what outhouse said it certainly seems like it would.

Just get another 9800gtx+, it will beat any single card option, and be just behind the HD4870X2. Dual 9800gtx+ will beat a GTX280 even, let alone a GTX260.

theres a ton of benches out rite now and a single 260 is neck and neck with 2 9800GTX,s. the 9800SLI may get a few more FPS but the overall gameplay is still jerky compared to a single 260.

with a 260 you get a card that will overclock great! has better and higher memory bandwidth giving you a much smoother framerate then a pair of 9800.s. the 260,s are much more future proof then a 9800.

with that said if i were to buy a new card i would not buy the 260 then upgrade to the 280. i would buy one or the other.

Yes there is enough difference between a 9800+ and a 260 to justify the price difference.
The 260 is considerably faster especially in DX10.

That is what I wanted to hear :D
And I am now the proud owner of a shiny new GTX 260. :santa:
Hopefully sometime in the next 90 days they will either drop the prices on the 280.
or come out with something newer than the 280 causing the 280 price to drop.
So I can snag one through step up.

Thanks to everybody for the advice.

You shouldnt be getting 10 FPS on that game with the system you have. What AA setting? Could be a driver issue.. 10 FPS no way.

Ordered a GTX 260 also, found no other nvidia card worth considering. I also think this is nvidias strongest pricepoint vs ATIs offerings.
