Got a new laptop the other day with Vista and SP1. I installed BF2 and when I try to start it the screen goes black and then crashes. I disabled UAC, switched on compatibility mode for XP/SP2, ran it in administrator mode, and it didn't make any difference. Can anyone help?

Thanks

What are the specs on your laptop ? It will not run on one with onboard graphics etc.
I had trouble running BF2 on my old laptop with a 8600GS, runs great on my new one with a 8800 though :)

try updating all of your drivers on the laptop too and then uninstall and reinstall. I dont think you need to run it in xp/administrator compatibility mode either. Also make sure you patch to the latest (1.41 i think) before you try to run it.

This is what I bought:

I tried patching it to 1.41 already and it didn't help. I'll have to check on the drivers and see about that. I figured it was SP1 cause it runs on my Wife's year old HP with integrated graphics and it doesn't have SP1.

Weak, I tried to install and play COD4 and Doom 3 but they also generate an error and won't run. I have all the latest drivers from what I can tell.

I say, when in doubt, blow it all away and try a fresh install of everything.

Install XP with a complete format, install only req drivers to get online, then do SP2/SP3, then install chipset/video/sound drivers in that order.

COD4 and Doom3 aren't very taxing as far as modern hardware is concerned. Low FPS is one thing, an error and crash is another.

If that doesn't work then there may be something else going on.

This was my cure for the CTD.

I just reinstalled windows and wanted to play some bf2, but I forgot something... the latest DX9. I don't know how I forgot, but when I installed it it fixed the problem just fine. I don't know... you might want to try it.

Just a suggestion :P

Try running bf2 in high priority

There are no XP drivers for this laptop. I think it may be a compatibility issue with the ATI drivers. I usually only buy Nvidia stuff because I've had trouble with ATI before.

How can I run DX9 in Vista?

Try running bf2 in high priority

Doesn't work.

COD4 and Doom 3 demos create APPcrash errors, BF2 just won't start. I finally found that FEAR combat works, but its the only one so far.

I dont believe it is SP1 causing your problems. I have run BF2 on a laptop with a Geforce 6150 and it works. Try using different drivers? Do a complete driver wipe and reinstall? Also I would try third party drivers like those made by NGO or something.

Yeah BF2 runs on my Wife's HP that has a Geforce Go 6150 also. I think it is the drivers too, downloading a modded driver now. :-/ There is only one driver for this GPU out there so It looks like I'm stuck with trying to find a modded driver that works.

NGO modified ATI drivers.

NGO drivers detected and worked for a geforce 6150 go when no other driver (including Omega's) would so it should work for you. They also have decent performance too so have fun!

I tried to install it but I keep getting an .INF error stating it can't find a video driver, then it tells me to set it up with a standard VGA driver. I cannot do this though because every time I try too Vista automatically sets it up with the ATI driver and I get the same errors. Ugh...

Also, if it makes a difference. It came with Vista business, not sure if maybe there are extra security settings or something in business that might be messing with it.

OK well I installed Vista on my gaming rig to see what it would do and I can't get BF2 to work at all on it either. So I think I may just start working towards getting XP on this sucker so I can dual boot it. Must be some kind of fluke that it works on my wife's HP (didn't even need to run it in admin mode, go figure). Thanks for all the help and direction guys! :)
