Hi all

Well just got switched over to the new Docsys system by Comcast. But untill the final switch over ,they are not setup for people that are networking computers and having different ip address for using the internet, They said to leave my hub and computers hooked up and when evrything is switced over it will automatacially see the other computers on the network and set them up, Now my question is if i went to a router set up from what i belive it would do like an internet conection sharing for my three computers right? next question if i do that when comcast is completly switced over will it still see the computers on the network and start charging me the extra money each month for sepprate ip address Thanks for any help

It won't charge u any extra, as all it will see is one separate ip address! Why don't u just use a proxy server or ICS????

When you set up the router, it will be the only IP and MAC address that the provider will see. In most cases, the router will just clone the IP and/or MAC address that your provider has registered, if your provider requires that.

Yea, thats the huge advantage to a router, as opposed to just a hub or switch. They are very easy to set up and deal with too (at least mine is). :D

I'm not positive about this one, but I believe when you set up your router for the first time, you won't have all your correct information for connecting to Comcast. You will need to have the proper domain name, etc.. in the router setup screen. Again, I'm not completely sure about this one, but I had a similar situation and I had to take the information off the computer network setup screen to get the necessary info for the router. Heres an article that discusses routers a bit:

There was an excellent article on the main page detailing the steps in installing the router and configuring it to an ISP, but for some reason I can't find it. sry.
