I just installed a Digi Doc and placed a Thermal sensor directly on the back of the GPU and I'm reading 55c no load and 69~61c playing games.
Is this normal???
Even if it is I would like to bring it down!!!
How do I take off the dinky little heatsink on it so I could replace it. Do I just take a screwdriver and pry it off? How much force do I use(I know, I know, "Just the right amount should do it")

toss it in an antistatic bag, throw it in the freezer...
let sit for 30 mins...

then put a CC under your screwdriver and it should pop off, maybe a litting twisting would help..

should come off real easy

It's much safer to twist it if you can.
I have seen many many GPUs torn off!

You can also run the card so its super hot power down and
very quickly remove it.

The freezer trick does work, got a HSF off my gf2 with it :)
As for temps, the aforementioned GF2 hits maybe 33C in games with an 80x50x25 sink and 80mm fan at 7V on it. Over about 40C and it causes instability.

Jhan,

That is one hot 8500, just out of curiousity is it Retail? And is it overclocked?

My 8500 with a Digital Doc probe on back of Gpu has never been over 40*c at load.

I've noticed that many people have non overclocked 8500's that just seem to get alot hotter than others.

ps Just use the freezer or heating method mentioned ATI heatsinks pop right off.

Or stick your whole computer in the Ice-maker if you have
one. http://www.ytec.d2g.com/emoticons/suave.gif

That will help ya temps a bit.
