My office is currently looking for backup internet solutions incase out T1 goes down. I figure a few 56k modems will work, this is only for running Citrix Meta Frame and 56k is enough. What I want to know is do I need special modems for this or are regular modems enough? They are dialing into us, not us dialing out.
Is the V.92 worth it or should we just stick to V.90? How compatible is V.92?
Also, I was thinking about using these US Robotics modems: http://www.usrobotics.com/products/business/business-product.asp?sku=3CP3453
Would they work for my use? (no I'm not buying them from there)

Can a dial-up 56k modem work if it isn't used to dial a 56k ISP?

I'm not sure if things have changed, and I know nothing about Citrix besides the name, but I did mess with dial-in access to WinNT 4.0 Server a little a few years ago. I used the same Lucent-chipped v.90 modem I used for internet access at the time.
Had no problems after it was set up and the user account was configured for dial-in access; didn't connect at 56k, I THINK it was more like 34,400, but that modem never connected to my ISP at anything other than 45,333.
Hope my little tidbit helps!

Yes you should be able to do this as long as you have a 56K ISP. And depending on the routers you are running you may have the option of connecting external modems to the serial port and the router will switch and dial the 56k's when it senses the main pipe go down.
We had our old Citrix servers set up like that at my last job. Worked fine. Didn't get to play with it very much as we were upgrading everything at about the same time I started there but alot of people still accessed those servers in the same manner you're thinking of using as a backup.

Well I know it will work to dial in, we've got some dialup connections already, but I wanted 56K. Here's what I'm thinking. 56K is on the download only, so if you're using a consumer 56K modem on both ends neither one can send at 56K, so you're at 33.6K. I would think a special 56K modem that can SEND at 56K would be needed.
