You should PM a mod and get this thread moved into the Microsoft Operating Systems (http://www.ocforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=17) Section. Also provide as many specifics regarding the problem as possible like: OS (Win XP or VISTA), any blue screens, Service Packs, or errors while performing windows update. Also can you boot into safemode (F8)?

The guys in green are the mods... I'll take care of this one for you...

Did you just install service pack 3?

are you able to press ctrl + alt + del and does the "windows security" window come up? if so, choose "task manager". then in task manager, go to file > "new task (run..)" and type in "explorer".

does the start menu and desktop come up after that?

*edit: ah, i didn't realized that you just reinstalled and it is working fine.

at my previous job, i had a number of computers that were a certain build that someone before me made and many of the computers would freeze for a long time before the "explorer" process would start up. i ended up making a startup script that ran to check and see if explorer was running and if it wasn't it would automatically start it to keep the computers from freezing up. a bit dirty, but it is better than reimaging 100 machines...

at what point does it comes up with the error report?

this will get much more attention later in the day and once it is moved to the correct forum.

sounds like the windows update messed up.
boot into safe mode (keep pressing f8 when u turn the pc on) and select safe mode with networking.
see if you can get explorer to load correctly with that.
if it does, go to add/remove programs, and view updates
OR
do a system restore to before the update was applied

restart your pc as normal and the problem should have gone away...

if you can, instead of just applying a single update, download the whole sp3 and apply that. but make sure you create a system restore point first.
