View Full Version : I can't believe it...I bought a 360

I kept telling myself I wouldn't buy one as the Wii was good enough for me. I've been playing my Super Nintendo and Wii pretty heavily lately, although I've had thoughts about selling the Wii and getting a system that could output to 1080p, ether a 360 or PS3.
Graphics for the Wii had never bothered me really , and to be honest I only played it when I had friends over. LEGO Star Wars, GH3, Mario Kart, Wii bowling, and the occasional Twilight Princess were good enough for me.
Well I got a copy of Force Unleashed, and popped it in expecting great things (including the best graphics for Wii so far). As soon as that first level loaded and I took a few steps forward, I knew something had to give. I'd been watching the HD trailers for it (with gameplay taken from the 360 and PS3 versions) and seeing those clunky Wii graphics made me snap. I asked myself "why am I putting up with 480p when I can make the step to 1080p" :attn:
Immediately I went on the search for a used 360 (I tend to buy the systems that are moddable and so far no dice on the PS3) that involved me taking looks at craigslist, putting up WTB threads on several forums, and last but not least eBay. The idea I had was buying a broken RRoD system that still had the warranty sticker intact, then simply shipping it off to MS once I had it in my possession. I didn't want to spend a lot of $ since this was a spur of the moment decision to get one. Well I found one on eBay, a 360 Premium that came complete with everything except the original box and manuals. Even has the Falcon chipset and the HDMI port. Paid $125 shipped for it and it should be here Monday, at which point I'll set up an RMA with MS to get the ball rolling on this. I feel like a little kid all over again :bday:
Now I have to decide if I want to sell my modded Wii or not? :screwy: I actually use the homebrew channel more then I do the disk drive on it :p On top of that, I need to start compiling a 360 game list, so far I only have GoW and CoD4 on it
I'm so looking forward to stepping up from 480p to 1080p in my gameplay

Not to be a spoilsport or anything but I wouldn't have bought a borked unit. Once they're borked, they're borked and will be nothing but problems...... The DVD drive will fail or the GPU will die completely and since it isn't RROD, MS won't cover it.

Doesn't MS warranty cover the RRoD if its within its 3 year warranty? From hanging out on xbox-scene.com for a while, I've learned that MS is now shipping brand new replacment units for anyone that sends in a HDMI model 360. I plan on RMAing it once I know for sure they're sending out the Jasper chipset in their replacement units.

Um wrong. MS covers RRoD. My brother's unit is soon on it's way back to MS for it's second RRoD fix. Furthermore, this is the only problem his second hand unit has had and it's under warranty even bought from a local pawn shop.
Edit - They don't always send you a new HDMI model, but they do at least fix the unit and return it to you in working condition with a free month card of x-box live. Currently, we are trying to get MS to send us a new HDMI unit as this'll be the second RMA for RRoD. On a lighter side, my new HDMI arrives on or about Friday :D

I did the same, but I knew I wouldn't have the Wii for long, because I wanted to play Fable 2 with it comes out (preordered for 10/21)

Hmm, I heard that if you send in a HDMI unit, you're guranteed to get a HDMI unit back. But if you send in a unit that just has component outputs (like a launch unit), then they'll send you a unit based off the "Opus" chipset which is 90nm CPU/65nm GPU (like the Falcon) but its in an old case which don't have a space for the HDMI output.

Opus is basically a more reliable Falcon motherboard (w/ 65nm CPU) designed to fit in first-gen 360s, while Valhalla has a single super-chip that hybridizes the CPU and GPU. What's the reason for both?
The Xenon 360s had a ridiculous fail rate (as many of you know), so Microsoft has a ton of old boxes for that motherboard lying around—rather than **** off Greenpeace and dump them in a landfill, the re-jiggered Opus mobo offers a recycling solution. Unlike Falcon, no HDMI though. You'll probably get one if you send your RROD'd first-gen box back to Microsoft.

Read my post more carefully gentlemen, I made a typo and fixed it. They DO cover RROD issues but if/when the DVD drive or the GPU fails it will not produce the RROD and they will not cover it.

you got the cpu and gpu backwards the CPU is 65nm the GPU is 90nm, everyone just WISHES the GPU was 65nm

Wow totally read that wrong, sorry Fudge. In that case, totally agree :p
To G.R. - Yeah that's totally true, what I meant was that you aren't guaranteed to get a brand new unit, but it will be the same model. I know sometimes, for instance, if you have an older unit, they can also send you the upgraded one with the better cooling to further avoid the RRoD. That is, of course, if they don't "fix" it.

Any problems resulted from RROD will be covered under MS 3 year extended warranty. Everything else is just one year.
Friend of mind had RROD and the disk drive (even though was working) was scratching the disk. MS just fixed the RROD and won't replace the disk drive.

Yeah, I'm ALL FOR saving a buck but there are some things you just should not cheap out on and unfortunately the 360 is one of them. I feel bad for you and wish you would've posted here before buying so that we could've forewarned you.
I sent my xbox back to Microsoft and the only thing wrong with it was the ethernet jack got fried so that only the wirless network would work. Well they accepted it and replaced it for me. They even gave me a card for a free month of xbox live gold.

Sweet :attn:
And I know for sure the only thing wrong with the one I'm getting is the RRoD. Everything else (DVD-ROM, ethernet, etc...) works great. I'm not worried in the least about it.

I second this, I even bought the extended warranty through Microsoft two days after I bought my elite.

I would worry little!
MS will take a borked 360, replace failed component(s) clean it up, test it and package it for distribution. You will not get your unit back. I say that was a good buy as long as the warranty sticker is in tact.
My first RMA was replaced with a lauch unit that was noisy and just not right. One phone call and I had another coffin on it's way and the replacement unit is still going strong about a year later.
BTW, GoW 2 is set for a November 7th release and it's going to kick @$$

Another reason why I bought it, I don't want to wait for a year to get a PC copy of GoW 2...

RRoD is covered, my brother is on his 4th Xbox 360, w00t. I have an Elite, still on my first, almost 9 months, not one RRoD, w00t!

Has little to do with core, pro or elite! systems of the same era use the same internals, PERIOD. And not everyone will get the RROD either.

Yep, mine died 2x, never got the RROD. Knew it was going to be a contunuing issue so once I got it back the 3rd time, traded it for a PSP and got an HDMI 360.
