Hi, I just got this card and I noticed that the fan on the GPU was constantly at 100% and was loud as hell... after doing some looking it was suggested that I check for new drivers. After installing the new ones and rebooting, I noticed my system was alot quieter. I went into the nvidia control panel and saw that the fan was at 39% and 45ish degrees C. I logged into warhammer and started playing and about 10 min in I get a black screen of death, which has NEVER happened before. My first thought was the vid card overheated and shut down. When I rebooted I manually upped the fan speed to 70% and that's where it sits. MY question is, what causes the black screen and why wouldnt the default fan monitor work? Shouldn't the software regulate the fan speed?
Thanks!

The problem is, for the sake of being quiet, the fan has an automatic control. As temperatures rise and hit a certain point, the fan kicks in and cools it down.
The bad thing about that is that although your system is quiet, you risk the GPU over-heating and safe-shutting down before the fans can turn on.
Most reviewers recommend you manually up the fan speed on 8800GT/9600GT because of the single slot cooler design.
Be happy, your 8800GT idles at 45c and crashed on you once. My 8800GT idled at 60c and never played in 3d mode, no matter what my fan speed was lol. I highly recommend you get an aftermarket cooler. The Akasa vortexx neo is great and cheap:

Very quiet too.

I envy you, right now:
Fan 100%
Temp 56C
And I just cleaned the heatsink and put AS5 a week ago.

Indeed. The factory cooler does not really do its job. The aftermarket cooler is really the only "good" solution

Hummm high ambients?
Mostly above 24 all year long. 32 in summer. In your room 35+. In winter if that even exist here temps are usually between 25-30. I remember it wasn't that hot 10 years ago, blame it to global warming but that's another subject. Currently looking for an aftermarket solution.
