Recently I explained my problem having low HL performance... I explained that when I turned sound off I seemed to get better performance... Well it was suggested I get a new soundcard (my old one was onboard yuck) so I got a SB live value 5.1 today... got it installed and working and ran HL... I turn on net_graph 3 to check performance and OH BOY!!! a whole 3fps more =\ So once again any suggestions as to why I get sub 50fps... I would think on my system I would be reaching atleast a steady 70 like my friends with lower end computers...

don't use netgraph, it'll kill alot of your frames

check your frames use cl_showfps 1

that'll give you a more accurate number

what's your res at? OpenGL I presume.

I noticed before NetGraph killed at least 20 frames.

Use CL command like Gou suggested.

Try 16bit.

Uggh, forcing a GeForce 2 GTS to do OpenGL? Have you tried Direct3D?

Direct3D runs quite slowly for me in HL... and ya I will try 16bit color.

OpenGL is the better api to run on a geforce card. anyway, your problem is your processor, celleron, its 66 mhz bus and 1/2 the cashe size. HL is an older game, almost 4 years now, but came our when processors were all switching to 100 mhz bus's and seems to fair much better with a chip like that. Also it depends on the map, FPS seem to bounce around alot in Quake engine based games vs Unreal engined games and its because of maps with more detail seem to be hard on FPS in that engine. You could be at 100 FPS, which is as high as HL will go, at one second, walk outside or look at some special lighting effects and all of the sudden be at 50 FPS, its just HL. And finally make sure you are not running with FSAA on. Your card supports it but does a crappy job of it so if you normally get 100 FPS and turn on 2X FSAA you will now get 50 FPS and so on.
