Laptop Wont Do 16 meg

Hey Guys:

I just upgraded to 16 meg internet and my laptop wont go higher then 5 meg. It's an Acer Aspire 5570Z. Do I or can I replace what is hampering me from getting 16 meg?

How do you know its the laptop limiting you?

Do you have another computer on the network which is surpassing 5meg?

Are you on wired or wireless with your laptop, and what wired NIC and wireless NIC is in this laptop?

if you previously had "5 meg" internet access before, did you reboot your cable modem after upgrading to the faster speeds? i believe that a reboot (power off/on) of your cable modem is typically required when changing service levels (it is with comcast anyway)

comcast seems to have certain subnets that allow certain throughput. when i upgraded my connection, i had to restart my cable modem. when it came back up, my ip had changed subnets and voila, my speeds were increased.

are you on wireless? how far are you form the AP? what is your speed on the Wireless?(or wired ?)


also, what bently said, reboot your modem, if you dont get 16 megs then call your ISP they posisbly forgot to provision it (i'm sure you're using time warner or comcast)


they did that to me, and someone didnt put in something right, they should be able to reboot your modem but make SURE you test your connection before you get the tech off the phone!

your laptop has no effect on your internet speed.

any laptop thats has a onboard NIC is going to be atleast a 10/100 NIC.
so its not your hardware, unless you are connected to your network via wireless.

just because your ISP says you have a 16 meg speed, doesnt mean your going to see 16 megs. Comcats says i have a 50 meg conenction, but the best speed i ever download @ is 2 meg and speedtests.com shows i only get a 30 meg connection.

and like what was said below, other computers and devices on your network can suck up alot of bandwidth.

also, if this is a cable connection, your neighbors affect your connection speed as well. if your whole block is using the same cable company, and use them for internet too, you most likely will never even see speeds greater than what you had with your 5 meg connection.

basicly, there are alot of things at play, and not enough information

i think your logic is flawed in your example :) if my calculations are right, a 50 mbit connecion will yeild close to 6.25 in MB/s, you must be getting shafted ;)


either that, or like you said, your layout on the block, how many spliters you go through, etc. its vary hard to say.

whatever kilobit speeds you get, divide that by 8 and then you get the true kilobyte speed.. or mbit / mbyte

so 16meg connection is 2000kb/s download speed
my 8meg broadband usually gets between 600kb and 800kb download.

if your going through wireless, and the wireless is having signal loss, then you will get poor download speed.

what company are you with?

if your connection is ADSL then you will need to reboot the router (actually leave it off for a good 30 mins) then when it powers up, it goes through some sort of training mode to calibrate itself with the line.

isp's are complete rip offs. there are three reasons why i have stuck with my isp.
1) they speak english
2) the upload speed is over 1mb which is good for gaming
3) download speed is always close to what im paying for because of a super low contention ratio.

I had a tech here from Charter Cable because my desktop didnt go over 13meg on THEIR test site. Speedtest.com was slower at 11 meg and three others I used were all over the board from 8 to 12 meg.

I am going through a wireless connection on my laptop. I have a netgear router with a Motorola modem.

Everything has been configured and rebooted. My router however was not shut down for over 30 minutes. Only about 2 minutes.

Desktop speeds surpass 10 meg, at times.

I have two wired computers and my wireless lap top going through the router.

Not sure what NIC is or where to find it. The ned thing.

Let me know what else I can provide and I'll get it to you.

you do realize that is typical of most ISPs?

they don't guarantee those download speeds. those are just the maximum speeds available to you. after all, there could be a link outside your ISPs control that is limiting your download speeds.

wake up at 3am sometime and then do multiple speed tests from different sites. you are more likely to see the max throughput.

plug the laptop into the modem directly.

That will show you why wireless sucks, its slower then WIRES!

i dunno what its like over in the states but i would imagine its similar to here even tho ur high speed net is more abundant. here the further u are away from the telephone exchange the 'slower' (lower) your connection speed is. for example im on a 20mbit connection and i can only get upto 5-6 mbits on speedtest.com. mind u im at the furtherst point from the exchange they put me on.


again i would have thought your net was similar but i could be totaly wrong feel free to correct me would be good to know what u guys have.

Are you in the boonies? Because when I was, I usually topped roughly 3.2 Mbit.

if you have vista, it is vista. believe it or not. It's a tcp stack error. limits you to 5mbps throughput.

I know because I'm a supervisor at verizon in the FiOS tech support division. there is a hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939006 for this very issue known as the FiOS Patch because it generally only rears it's ugly head on FiOS installs (because very few places have faster than 5mb internet of any sort)
