View Full Version : 6k+ PPD, sub $130AR GPU...

just thought i'd share some recently found F@H-centric happiness with a new GPU of mine...
Asus 9800GT Ultimate
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121266
it's $150 + ship - $25 rebate (2 per house, yeah!!) - 3% live.com cash back
it's kind of a weirdly marketed card in that I think it is an overclocked 8800GTS rebadged as a 9800GT.
It's got 128 Stream Processors and comes with 1750mHZ shader clock out of the box! I currently have mine clocked to 2000mHZ shader and am getting just over 6k PPD and have been (knock on wood) EUE free and has not topped 57 C with 24/7 F@H use. Plus it requires just 1 6-pin and is standard 9" card so it's great for tighter fit cases.
Now I am not a gamer so I can not speak to it's gaming performance, sorry.
I know this is not a brand new card but I am pretty impressed with it's folding power/price ratio and thought I'd give a heads up to anyone out there looking for a new F@H GPU.

just noticed newegg is combo-ing it up with a ASUS P5N-T Deluxe also for $335 plus rebates on the board and GPU adding up to $55, not bad....$280AR....

Where is that combo paul? Ah, nm... I see it. ;)
Too bad I just don't buy Asus boards... I may have to take a chance on those vid cards though. Do they offer lifetime warranty?

Sorry, forgot to follow up on this, I dont think there is a lifetime warranty, might be just a year, I could not find much on it

Great find - Too bad I already have a 8800GT, this would be great with those specs out of the box - any luck overclocking? If it runs that cool at those specs, it must have some potential!
For folding, the 8800GS and 9600 GSO don't do too bad, and you can't beat the price!
FOLD ON!!!

I bought two... they came in yesterday. :)
Also, the Asus website specifies three year warranty. However, they also say that it must be handled through your retailer, and Newegg only specifies a one year warranty.
/slight rant
Meh, this is sounding kind of like Sapphire - I have one of their cards that is artifacting, go to their website, says two year warranty, handle through your retailer. Go to Newegg, they say one year warranty... and Newegg won't let you RMA the card. Why can't these AIB partners actually have a Service Department, so they can actually honor their warranty?
/end slight rant

Hmmm confusing on the warranty stuff....
I sold my gx2 and replaced it with one of these. Weekend project: pull out the p5k in my dedicated and replace it with the dfi lp jr that came yesterday and then install the second 9800gt ult that came yesterday also!

Call or email NewEgg customer support. They have to honor the longer manufacturer warranty in that case, regardless of whether their site lists a shorter time period.

Harlem can you let us know what you get PPD wise (per card)? I currently have a XFX 8800GTX folding at stock clocks but am debating if I should return it to frys and get two of these.

9600GSO were 34.99 AR recently... can't beat that price/performance ratio :)

Cool... maybe I can still get that X1900GT replaced after all. Maybe with something better. :)
I'm out of town for the weekend... so It'll be next week before I get a chance to really see what my Ultimates do. I'm hoping to be in the same boat as paul and get 6k per card. One could say, he's mentoring his mentor on this one. :D

guys, I thought the 9800GT is really just a rebadged 8800GT, no??? 'cos it's very rare to get 6k out of a 8800GT??
checked again, the spec & the cooler looks more like 8800GTS (G92)/9800GTX tho..... so, nevermind, it consume too much power for me then.....
also, how much ppd is those 9600GSO?? I suspect they consume quite a bit less power than the 8800/9800GT??

I think the big difference is in the 128 sp's compared to 112 with the 8800GT/9800GT, so yeah it is really like 8800GTS (G92), or closer to a 9800gtx than a 9800GT.

Haha whoops I forgot the title. :screwy:
Hmm these are so tempting. 6kppd vs my 5100 at $50 less before rebates.. I assume these would be able to run games on par with my current card too, right?

9600 GSO will get 4600+ ppd @ around 50W - prob the best bang for the buck

Would this out perform an ultra? How about how well will it fold with my GTS?
