I've just bought a dehumidifer unit for use at home but a quick look in the back has me thinking....

Its full of fans, compresors and a HUGE radiator! Water cooling ahoymethinks!

Has anyone ever converted one of these things into a water cooling unit? I quite like the idea of have everything in a separate case with just a couple of tubes feeding the waterblock. Nice and tidy.

Cant find any tech details on it but the one I got is linked from this page...

Any sugestions appreciated.

Get a thermo-probe in there and measure its extremities all around the pipework that lies in there - try then to find out the absolute vapour throughput of the unit.

You may be onto a winner, but I would imagine it would mean draining out all of the glycol / aspen temper before doing any remiedial work which could be messy as well as tedious.

Messy and tedious are no problem for me, I'll do (almost!) anything in persuit of a good idea.

I think my next step is to mail the manufacturer and see if theyll give me some tech-specs. Better not tell them what I plan to do, may upset or confuse them a bit!

Does anyone hear know any technical details of how these things work as opposed to a cooling system? I know its got all the same components, just used in a different way, but how??

Basic operation is like a fridge. The air is passed over the evaporator section of the refrigerator causing the air to cool and water to condense on the evaporator. This is caught in a tray and drained out. The air is passed to a heater and brought up to a preset temp. It is a low power refrigerator and is not intended for heavy duty cooling and would not handle the kind of chilling that you would subject it to.
It could be used in conjunction with a bong to improve the efficiency of the bong. If it was rigged up so that exhaust air was fed in, dried and passed back it should theoretically work quite well.

I might end up using the radiator and fan which are in the dehumidifier case but strip out all the other gubbins and add a better pump. Come to think of it I could leave the water collector in too, it would make a good resevoir I think?

Do you think Id be able to reuse the coolant thats in there? Im pretty sure it'll be a better option than water.

Im deffinately going to make this work, it really appeals to me to have the whole system self contained in a neat case siting next to the main rig with just a pipe in between. Not to mention the improved safety of having most of the potential leaks away fro the pc.
