Howdy Binary,

SETI@Home is a small program designed to take small pieces of recorded radio signals from the Arecibo Radio Telescope and look for interesting signal patterns. It allows the SETI folks to "distribute" the work load over many small computers instead of buying time on a super computer or having to build a super computer. As such SETI is by far the most successful program of this type!

We are looking for a signal from another world, aliens. If your machine is the one that crunches the data that finds ET then you get listed as a co-discoverer!

Many of us have developed running SETI into quite a hobby. We have ended up building more computers to run it on and we upgrade or tweak our systems to run SETI as fast as possible. It is fun to compare with others who run SETI and even to join a team and compete against other teams. In the end we are all working on the same big team to find ET.
