View Full Version : Upgrading this old PII system
My uncle has an old PII system which he wants upgrading. The spending limit is about £100.
He wants to be able to run XP on it:
PII 233MHz (66MHz bus)
64MB PC100 RAM (maybe PC66)
4GB ATA HDD
CDROM
FDD
ob video (4 or 8MB - not sure).
1) Will this mobo take PC133 or PC100 RAM or just PC66?
2) Could I put a 450 in it? (100 bus)
3) Whats the RAM limit do you think? (256-512MB RAM?)
4) Could I put a PIII in a slotket in this?
Thanks!
u need to find the make of the MB and post what that is and also check thier site for that info
PC133 ram should run fine at the 66 or 100 speed
If you cannot open that pc to see what's in it..or dont have the manuals to see the specs....install "Sandra" and see whats in it.

for XP to run decently you will need at least a 450-500 mhz processor and min 128(recommend 256) mb of good ram
To run Windows XP you will need lots of ram, and you will also want to get a much bigger hard drive. XP will take up most of the hard drive that is currently in that old comp.
its highly unlikeley that its a 100mhz fsb board, its probably 66mhz so that rules out most recent processors. and i would check on the ram type. i recently upgraded my grandpas old gateway p2 233 computer and his motherboard used edo ram!
i opened it up and im all, WTF?
but i found him an old slot 1 bx board and got a slocket and i put a 600mhz celeron on it and 256mb ram and i got an old 6gb hard drive to put in there. (to go with his 6gb he had already, i would have done raid but he didnt have enough money left.)
i stayed below his $170 spending limit :) w00t! ebay comes in handy for that stuff :)
I would like to put a PII 450 or 400 in it. Wuld it take a slotket @ 500?
I can upg the RAM thats not too hard and HDD isn't too hard to upg.
Try skimming the classifieds for a Slot Computer(I believe I saw a 466 Celeron avaliable) anyways that and ram.
If you can get anything in the 400 range great!
I would recommend a minimum to run 256 to run XP.
Yodums
Thanks guys!
Yes, I will go for 256 - RAM is getting a bit more expensive but its not too bad.
on that computer you cant get a p3 or a more recent p2. cuz ill bet that you only have 66mhz bus to work with that limits you to celeron
