View Full Version : Finally got my 2nd 4850
I finally had to bite the bullet on best buy's 4850 for $149.99 last night so i could crossfire it with my other one. LOL, btw, they are selling 3870's for the exact same price as the 4870. At first i couldnt get it to run but traced it to being the amount of power my mobo was allowing to run through my pci-e slots, it was set to 25w. Overall, i am VERY happy with the performance, in the games that support it. But with those two fans at 100% all the time, its driving me crazy. Does anyone have any suggestions for a decent aftermarket cooler that wont break the bank when buying two. thanks.
well...just ran 3dmark 06....scored 13,700...ugh

There might be some issues with crossfire in regards to 3D mark, my scores are bumping up to the high 15k then sometimes i get 14K its a weird issue really but once you play games it shines like a true great card.

I have read a few PPl that the CF install didnt work as it should have . So they pulled one card ran driver cleaner then reinstalled the drivers then put the second card in .
If you check in GPUZ it should let you know if the second card is installed and CF is enabled .
BTW 13.7k seams low as im over 14k with 1 8800gt .
im thinking that my proc is having A LOT to do with this.....wondering if i should reinstall.
Why does one of my cards run 20C+ hotter than the other with the same fan profile at all times. After playing cod4 for about 20 minutes one card is at 75c and the other is at 50c. When idling one runts at 37c and the other around 50C

i think you gotta make 2 profiles

and you have to remember the bottom card is dumping heat which might affect the top card...switch card positions and see what happens.

hmmm, score a little low, driver issue perhaps or cpu bottleneck. you should be getting an 06 score of around 14500k and at least P8000 in vantage. with CF jeez upwards of 20k.
the latest rivatuner is easy to change settings like fan speeds for individual cards. might help.
I did the rivatuner thing and i get like p10500 in vantage. I just did a bios update that is "supposed" to make ati cards run better in my board but i dont know exactly what it changes. i have my phenom at 2.6, im disappointed in my scores, but in games that i can tell a difference, its a HUGE differnece.

Well, AMD is not the best for 3Dmark.. so if you can see a HUGE improvement in games. Then forget about benchmarks for a while and enjoy the cards!
When I put in my second card, I ended up just wiping the drivers and reinstalling the 8.9's with both cards installed & bridged for CF. It worked like a charm. On the rig below, I get ~18.9k in 3dmark06@1280x1024(19" lcd). Also all my CCC settings are how I use the machine daily, no tweaks for a high 3dmark score.

LMFRY, Congratulations on getting the 2nd 4850. I suspect your fan Profiles are not setup right. Edit them and look for the second card. I'd bet the fan is lower.
Im getting really roided out now about my 3dmark06 score...i was browsing and found one from my c2d/8800gt rig....and it got 12.1k to my 13.8k with my 2x4850...do yoiu guys have ANY ideas on what could be going on...i know my phenom is hurting me some...but it HAS to do better than this. BTW, i fixed my fans with radeon bios editor and now they hit 100% by 70C, much better imo. This is seriously enough to make me think about going to a e8500 system.
