I just went through the exact same decision. I ended up with the Gateway. At $100 less, after tax's and shipping respectively, with better hardware I just couldn't go with the Asus. The Asus had a couple things that worried. One was the lagging keyboard and the other was the screwed num pad arrangement. With the Asus being a larger 15.4" the size difference really wasn't that dramatic. The better screen and video card were really big pluses to me as well, not to mention the 3+ hour battery life. Another thing with the Asus was dealing with the time it would take for shipping if I did get a defective one, where the Gateway would be a simple swap at the store. My only issue with the Gateway so far is the pulsing fan. It does it random times for no apparent reason. But with that being the only issue I feel I got a great bargain for $1350 after taxes.

You'll be fine with headphones. It is not overly loud by any means, my wife has to mention it. With headphones on you'll never hear it.

That gateway seems to be awesome i was actually reading an article about it earlier today in one of the PC magazines and they couldn't find anything wrong (as in if, or where they cut corners in making such a nice laptop for so cheap) they rated it at a 92% i am actually torn right know between that one and a few others, that one is in my price range though, the other ones are dreams lol good luck and if you do get it, let me know how you like it and if its worth it, so i can make up my mind lol good luck

Its a nice piece isn't it. I have gamed more on this than I did on my more powerful desktop just because its more convenient and I don't have to distance myself from everyone. I can just plop down on the couch next to my wife while she watches desperate housewives and game away.
