I Fold for another team, but come here because I know you folks are some crazy folders, and know a ton about it.
I have been just running the GPU client on my 2 main rigs. One is a Q6600 quad with an ATI 3870X2. Can I get any real points by installing a CPU folding client? And if so, which one.
Another one is an E6600 dual core. It is feeding an overclocked 8800GT GPU folder. What should I run on it?
If you can help tweak my CPU's for Folding, I will fold with the CPU's for team 32 for 2 weeks. WinXP on both boxes.
Thanks for your time.

Glad to help any folder, Hafaphoto. Kickback points appreciated, but not necessary. :)
For your quad, the SMP client is the answer. Do *not* try and cut any corners when you install it. Go through the install sticky, step by step. I'd advise making a printout of that sticky, just to be sure. The Deino client would be best.
Depending on your other uses, and the amount of memory, and how much you want to work with it, you may want to try having two virtual machine's, each one running an instance of the SMP client, as well as the one GPU running natively. That results in the greatest production, but the responsiveness of the rig does suffer.
For an ATI GPU, the Set Affinity II program is what you need.
For the dual core, it's a matter of how responsive you want the rig to be. Best production is one SMP and the GPU client. Some have found either one or two uni-processor (5.04) clients, improve their use of the rig, though. (and provide more reliability, as well).
Hope that helps.

You know hafa... you keep stopping by and asking questions... you know we're going to recruit you. :D It's just a matter of time. ;) Because you need to sign-up and Fold with us during the OCF "Fall Brawl" Folding Contest (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=579568). :)
Great advice you've already gotten Adak... yes, you'll want to go with an SMP client on your quad. If you want to stear clear of any VMWare, then a single Windows SMP client install (Deino- as Adak suggests) will do nicely.
If you want max ppd... you'll need to go the VMWare route. Bit more to do to get it up and running, much more resource hungry. If this is your "daily driver" machine I'd advise not installing VMWare- unless you have 4GB or more of RAM, then 2xVMs + GPU2 can run pretty darn smoothly IMO.
Also, we'll need to know if you're running one or two GPU2 clients on your 3870X2. If you're not running two, you need to be running two. :) ...and both on the same CPU core. That's where Set Affinity II comes into play. ;)
For the E6600, I've personally been less than successful at getting SMP and GPU2 to play nicely together under XP, may be different for Vista, I'm trying to get someone to test that for us now. You can install a single, standard cpu client to use the other cpu core that isn't busy with GPU2. You'll also need something like Set Affinty II to keep the FAH CPU core process running on core 0, allowing GPU2 to run exclusively on core 1.

Thanks a lot for the info. Looks like I have some reading to do. The Quad is my daily driver, so no VM on it, I want to be able to kill the GPU and the future SMP to game, then kick it back in.
I would love to run 2 instances of folding on the 3870X2, will read up on that.
Now my E6600 just runs a 8800GT. It is on a Crossfire mobo, and I will be getting another 8800GT that I want to get folding on it if possible. I could not give a rats arse if it is responsive, as long as I can use it if I need to. I have the DVI dongle thing for that.
I really appreciate you folks helping me out. Like I said, hafaphoto @Team 32 will get some points added. I use to fold here long ago. I left for reasons I don't see a need to stir up. That was long ago. You folks rock out the points, and if you need advice, ask the successfull, not the loosers.
You folks know how to Fold. And again, thanks in advace for the help.

"This application has failed to start because smdcalrt.dll was not found. Re-installing the aplication may fix the problem."
And why the F is there no uninstall option?! Sorry about my bad typing, using 2 puters and keyboards.

Got one
gpu core running.
Going to leave it at that for now.

That is the most efficient and stable of the FAH clients, right now - so good choice, there.
