Glad more and more ATI beta drivers have been leaked recently. Seems like nVidia always had non-WHQL driver being leaked every week while you only got one driver release per month from ATI :(

yea but you also have to consider that ati releases one driver for everything and nvidia has a driver for 3dmark another one for crysis another one for cod another one for stability one for overclocking ect ect ect
they could never make one driver that works good for everything
ati kicks ass

i was once a Nvidia user for a while and impressed with their beta drivers, i remember there was one time that i've tried a beta driver for 8800gts (forgot which ver is it tho) that gave me 1000 plus score on 3DM06. As for Ati, i havnt experienced "as of yet" that kind of improvement on using beta driver.

just downloaded, and gave it a go on 3dmark06. Score jumped from 16.3k to 16.7k. I did have a bios flash in between the last time I ran it though, so it's not concrete. At least there's fan control though.

Worked fine for me XP Pro x64. Fan setting as well.
Old 3dMark Score: 21833
3DMark Score - 21833
SM 2.0 Score - 9632
SM 3.0 Score - 11989
CPU Score - 4181
New 3dMark Score: 21780
3DMark Score - 21780
SM 2.0 Score - 9616
SM 3.0 Score - 11913
CPU Score - 4188
No change really, a slight drop, but that little is probably just a few more processes open or something minor...So no real score change, but the fan control makes it more than worth while IMO.
I think I might of had both card at 850/1200 last run, only 800/1100 each this time, I'll mess with it and run again soon...

im guessing i have no fan connected to the video card (im on water) thats why the fan controller doesn't show on ccc, maybe?

OMFG! i get BSOD every time i restart the comp. :bang head it happens on saving settings...shutting down... then bam -BSOD! 4th time now since i installed 8.10 ccc
im guessing i have no fan connected to the video card (im on water) thats why the fan controller doesn't show on ccc, maybe?
Sounds logical to me. it can detect if you have the 4 pin fan on the card connected to anything.
xtkxhom3r
09-30-08, 01:30 AM
oh wow this is odd.... with the official 8.9 drivers i get 21.6k and with these beta drivers i get 20.9k.... thats 700 points... im not a big fan of 3dmark or anything but i wonder if this is going to affect my game performance?...
ill probably keep them anyways just because of the fan controller its so much more convenient

Loaded these puppies up on Vista x64. Got 1 message at end of install something about can't find a file but just clicked ok and all was good. The new fan controller works great for quick adjustments and works for each card separately if your are x-fire. Fan profiles still work too. Only played in COD 4 but with zero problems.

i wish there was a way to control the speed of both fans with out having to switch to the other card

Sorry, only XP x64 here....
Just turned my pc on for the day and it booted into Ubuntu fine, then I moved into XP and it booted fine, but once CCC loaded screen went all crazy winter snow on me, restarted into Windows and it was fine...Weird huh? I went to 8.10 last night booted and even ran 3dmark06 twice...just random boot weirdness maybe?

in console type /set com_maxfps 250, that maxs it out at 250fps, you can us any # up to 1000 I think, most PB servers have a cap of 200-250. If I set my cap to 250 I avg about 175-250 depending on map. I can jump to 300-400 on some spots in some maps...

ill stick with my 60fps cap what way i stay in sync with my tv and i get no tearing :)

With a 4.5ghz dual core and an OC'd 4850 I can't imagine your "dropped" fps from XP to Vista would even have an insignificant effect on your performance let alone a significant effect. That would be like comparing 150 frames to 130. A drastic drop, yet, not noticable to your playing. Are you just looking at your numbers and getting a placebo effect, or do you actually feel like it's slower?

On top of it feeling slower, the only game which I'm really noticing it hit the hardest is CoD4. My *MINIMUM FPS*, I don't care about AVG or HIGH, has dropped a bit lower than i like. Normally in XP it would usually be about 100 or higher, averaging around 130 to 150...but it's taking dips into the 80's which creates a bit of slowness or skippyness, if that's even a word. And in a smoke grenade my FPS get slaughted all the way to the 30's which makes zero sense...where as in XP they barely dropped at all. That's what I'm talking about, same settings in both OS's.

DX9 is slower in Vista... DX10 is worse. One of the reasons I haven't switched.
And CoD4 is DX9 only.
I've never understood the people who keep saying "Vista and/or DX10 gives higher fps than WinXP/DX9 in games!" or where they get their 'data' from. I'm guessing they played games with WinXP on a caveman PC with 1.5 ghz single core, then upgraded to a quad core 3+ ghz and Vista, then think "ohhh DX10 is so much better!" lol.

Does it make any actual difference if it's above the range of the monitor anyway (unless you're on CRT)?

It does in how it feels. I've always had a personal preference of at least 100fps to play a perfect solid game...whenever it does the dips into the 80's it just doesn't feel as smooth.

I personally don't care about having over 60 fps consistent. Most games do that easy, but Crytek2 engine games get severely bogged down by Vista; see the 5 page Crysis Warhead thread in Games section for my recent findings. Vista performance in gaming is worse than I thought.

This server is about 15x slower than the speeds I'm getting from megaupload.
And those bashing Vista <-> XP Gaming performance are doing something wrong. I tested the XP vs Vista difference WAY back when the drivers were immature and the performance drop was pretty insignificant. So unless progress actually went backwards, I hardly doubt that it's bad. I game in Vista and love it. You just need more RAM.

The comparison is WinXP Pro SP3 with 2GB DDR2 1066 RAM and Vista64 SP1 with 4GB DDR3 1600 RAM. So I doubt RAM is the problem. It's not really bashing, only stating how it is. Benchmark results.
Personally I don't care, unless Microsoft forced me to use Vista.

I want to be able to see the ATI GPU temp in my tray like NVidia's Precision allows me too. I can't see any options for that in Catalyst or in ATI Tray Tools. Speedfan's newest version also does not appear to support this. Any suggestions?

234 Points Higher in 3DM03

Spikes in results on diff drivers are normal. Yours are in normal range.
I get better result with M2N on 3dmark06 and worse with k9a2 platinum. Same hardware on both mobos. One is cheap entry level and the other is MSI's flagship :) Now that's a mystery, not yours :)

The Cat 8.10 download is huge compared to the other Cat suites. What gives with the bloat? Are they really worth it over the Cat 8.9 at this point ...or wait for non beta approved drivers? I will using them with a PowerColor HD4870 1gb PCS+ so it is a non reference board and OS will be XP SP3. Thoughts?

Are the 8.10's out for Vista 32 yet?
these drivers game me some twitchyness in cod4, went back to 8.9 and it dissapeared.

beta drivers include all software, such as hydravision and many other things. not to mentional a HUGE list of languages. You won't actually install most of it, so the bloat is just the install file.

Mainly the fact that is not compressed unlike the official drivers you download from AMD/ATI's site.
