I have spent the better part of last night and today pulling Cat5e from the basement into the attic and then down to various rooms in the house.

I absolutely HATE crawling around in the attic! The fiberglass dust gets past the mask, gets into every pore of the body and it drives me nuts.

After I run the last bit of Cat5, my dearest bride asks me: "Gee honey, while you are up there, could you run TV cable and phone to those rooms too? Wouldn't you feel bad if the kids decided (she decided) that they wanted it and you didn't run it while you had the chance?" (NO. 4 cable outlets in the house is enough, they spend too much time watching telly anyway)

Being the good husband I am though, I am off to the Depot to get a spool of coax. (Grumble grumble grumble)

I hate running cable.

Running cable does suck pretty bad!
I'm at the point now that while I'd like to put a pc in my bedroom, I'm not going to until wireless networking matures a bit and goes down in price! I have 2 in one room, with a gateway router, and 4 in the basement with a hub. Not running more!

Although now that I think of it, I still have a cable I spent 8 hours running a few years ago..............................

Yep it does suck. I used to do it for a living, I actually liked it except when I had to go into a crawl-space underneath a house, all kinds of critters live under there  . The outside work I loved, but winters were kinda tuff sometimes, and learning to climb a power pole was scary at first too, but it was easy when I left. I would still be doing that today if the money was good, but it wasn't.

Sounds like a gripes and moans post. Please post in the proper topic! LOL

I helped a friend run internet throughout his home. It had a crawl space under it which was about 2' high. The dirt under was so fine, it was almost like baby powder. One movement and a cloud would boil up. I sneezed black dust for 3 days.

I do a lot of attic wiring, but I just moved all of my systems to my bedroom a couple days ago, and refuse to go up there atm. Right now, there's a coax cable streached across my living room floor. LOL

I would rather tear down the walls and repair the drywall than crawl through fiberglass insulation...

And BMX, are you ever gonna make that jump? I keep watching your attempts in your avatar but you never make it!

Did I mention that Cat5 makes perfectly good phone cord too? LOL

Well, I guess I get my gold star for the week. RG8U and Cat5e (2 lines) to all of the rooms is done except for finishing up the outlet boxes, which will take about an hour max. Now I have to run a new A/C circuit in the basement, so I can get power to the servers and the switch, and the wiring will be done for a while.

I should have the network wired to the active rooms by the end of the week, and the servers up by the end of next weekend. Once all of this is done, I think I'll have a neighborhood LAN party to test everything! Whaddyathink? A little UT and CS at Newbie's house so the neighborhood kids can wipe the floor with the old guy? :D

Anyway, I am at least done in the attic (for ever I hope).

Newbie, you know you only utilize 4 wires of the Cat 5 for the network right? And that you can use the other 4 for phone lines? And that you can buy dual outlets which are RJ45/phone (forget which RJ number they are) for this?

Now he tells me... :)

Yes, I did know that. It took me less time to run the last 5 than it did to run the first 4. I used the last wire run as feeder for the fishtape, so getting them into the attic took very little time. It would have taken far longer to locate the special jacks and IF 1000BaseTX over copper ever becomes reality, the wire is already dedicated to the network. Running the lines for phone was a piece of cake.
