View Full Version : Why am I having issues with drivers later than 8.6? 4870 w/ Vista64!

So I have a VisionTek 4870 (750/900 stock speed). I first installed the 8.6 drivers that came with the card, and they worked fine. Pull about 15k in 3dmark06.

If I install drivers LATER than 8.6's (Ive tried 8.8, 8.9 and the beta 8.10) they all do the same thing. GPUz errors on the GPU clock speed, and the fill rates, and also, my bandwidth drops on my memory to 64gb/s down from 115 (at stock speed) with the 8.6 drivers.

I thought it might just be an error in GPUz but all my benchmarks show otherwise. I lose about 3000 points in 3dmark06 and when I go with furmark, I lost a bunch as well.

Whats the deal? Its really irritating that I cannot upgrade my drivers. Everytime I do a driver install I remove the catalyst manager from add/remove programs, then I use DS to remove anything left over. Restart and do a fresh install of drivers. The only time anything is right is with the 8.6's :(

**Quick update. I left the CCC installed from the 8.10's so I could keep the fan control but I rolled back the drivers to the 8.6's. Its back up to speed. So I know now it IS the later drivers giving me issues, and not CCC (not that I thought it was CCC, Im just happy to have fan control and keep the earlier driver, although an updated driver would still be nice).

Hey Doz,

I had all kinds of problems with CCC (8.6 - 8.9). No matter what I did I could not get above 507/514mhz. My card is an HD2900XT capable of 743/1026mhz or higher. No matter how many tips or tricks, forums I read or drivers I used I couldn't get to my cards speeds. I finally talked to someone in a forum and they recommended un-installing CCC (everything except the Vista Display Driver) and using something like ATI Tray Tools. Once I did that I was able to clock my card at 742.50/1026 mhz and control my fan speeds and my card is stable and cool (57c) with no performance issues.

Not sure if this will help you but it appears CCC was my main issue and not the cards drivers.

Best of luck,

jer
