Don't bother using ata 100 cable then use it for something better

Yup yup...

Its sort of a downgrade basically.

But if you plan on using ATA100 you can get a card which will add some ATA100 support.

As I understand it, one need to use a 40pin/80conductor IDE cable to obtain ATA66 and/or ATA100. A 40pin/40conductor IDE cable will not allow you to obtain ATA66, only ATA33.

40 Pin for ATA33 and below.

80pin for ATA66 and above.

everything will be perfectly fine if you just hook it up to a cable that looks like this (with 80 wire that is):
http://cableclub.com/view_product.asp?item_no=20430

or this

http://cableclub.com/view_product.asp?item_no=20440

THERE IS NO difference between them except the second link is higher quality cable.

you will see no increase in performace with an ata 100 controller on the mobo because your hard drive can only give about 50 MB/s max throughput to the system

On the contrary, an ATA 100 drive will peak (or burst up to) around 70 or 80. There's no noticeable improvement going from 66 to 100 tho.

Thanks for the quick reply...

...If only I could get the cash to buy the drive that quickly...
