View Full Version : Need help in OC'ing my 4870 1GB.

From what I've read and heard I decided to buy the 4870 1GB version.
Got it for 4 days now and I'm really happy with it.
It's a MSI 4870 1GB OC Edition (R4870-T2D1G-OC).

Today I wanted to try to clock it and see what happens in Crysis.
Because on stock speeds I can play it on Very High 1280x1024 and 8x AA but it'll go under 15 FPS on some parts.
Currently I've got the GPU running on 825 MHz and the memory on 960 MHz.
My fan speed is at 45% and it won't go above 45 degrees while gaming.
So I know I can get alot more out of it.

But here is my problem:
I've seen people getting their memory on 1100 MHz.
If I put it on 999 MHz it's running fine but the moment it goes over 1000 MHz it gives me a black screen and I can't do anything but turn off my PC.
And when I boot back into Vista it's back on 825|960.

I've read about volt mods but I won't be doing that, I think that's too risky.
I can play Crysis at Very High on 1280x1024 and 8x AA (8x is my max in Crysis, I thought it was 16x?) and it won't go under 20-25 FPS with the card being on 825|960.
But I want to get more, and I know I can, because the temps of my card aren't that high, my GPU VRM is 48 degrees at the moment and fan speed only at 45%.
I also OC'ed my CPU (E8500) at 3.5GHz, and I can notice the difference.
I can't go higher at the moment because I'm still using stock cooler.
Ordered a Asus Arctic Square, waiting for it to arrive. ^^

Almost forgot to mention: can I safely put my GPU on 900 MHz or higher then 850 MHz?

Can anyone help me out?

Nobody got any suggestions?

Sorry I can't be too helpful as I am waiting on a PowerColor 1gb board now but two things: first, seems the memory on the 1gb cards OC poorly so far; and second, OCing the core speed will boost performance a lot more than OCing the memory will.

The fact that you can't break 1000mhz sounds a little weak as I think that close to 1100mhz should doable on 1gb boards based on an OCC review. Is your PSU up to the job and what Cat drivers are you using?

Why do you wanna overclock that card?

Why do you wanna overclock that card?

:welcome: to OCforums. First time here?

My memory OC sucks on my Sapphire 4870 1GB too. Maxes out around 970/975 before I start artifacting.

Thanks for the welcome :) but i mean that card is extremely powerful. Why would he want to overclock? Unless hes experienceing a fps drop in a game and the only game that card has trouble with period (or every video card) is... Crysis. I wouldnt overclock a card for one game, just my opinion ;)

Well, even with an high OC I don't think it will own Crysis. Here is the Crysis benchies... the stock Powercolor is at 800/950, Asus at stock clocks, and the OC Powercolor at 860/1100.

You already have an "OC" edition so it already is OC over stock. Even if you OC more your not likely to see a huge difference. You may have to run benchmarks to see what effect it will have in the numbers. Like others have said you got probably the fastest card on the market already, So enjoy it an play your games.

The point of OCing is for more. Why do we OC our CPU's, our memory, even our video cards when some of them are already fast? Because we want MORE. That's the whole point, to get every single piece of speed out of all of your hardware. Why is everyone being so deconstructive? I noticed a 4fps increase in my scores just going from 750-780 on my core. That can be considered a lot when the original score is only 50 fps. More core can bring up to 10fps increase. That's 20% more than stock, hardly just a number increase but a noticable increase in feel too.

I understand, Im an overclocker too but when your dealing with the absolute best that performs how you want it to why do it when your risking shortening the life of a perfect part or damaging it? I mean if you do it as a hobby and have the money, heyy lol thats another story. :santa:

1GB cards will not run over 1000 memory from what I've seen, the cards with memory clocks over that you're looking at are 512K cards.

@Craxbax, I've got a OCZ GameXstream 700Watt, should do the job I guess.
And I'm using CCC 8.9 with drivers included, but using RivaTuner to OC it.

@Alien432, I know I allready have a OC version but the only difference between the OC edition and the stock one is that the GPU runs 30 MHz faster, that's not much.
And the difference between having my CPU / video card on stock speeds and having my CPU on 3.5 GHz and the video card on 825|960 is a huge difference.
When I put them on stock speeds and try to play Crysis at the highest settings the FPS drops under 10 FPS, when I OC my CPU and video card the FPS won't even go under 20 FPS.

EDIT: I just tryed to OC it in CCC and got it running at 790|1015 right now.
Too bad the max GPU speed in CCC is 790.
I tryed to run the memory on 1050 and got artifacts.
Seems RivaTuner can't bump it higher then 1GHz but CCC can.
