Just got me a HSF for GPU of my second. Running a Voodoo3 2000, Question is, and I know it's been asked 1 000 000 times, how do I get the original heatsink off? i'm not goint to stick it in the freezer just yet, I heard that running the GPU really hard will loosen up the thermal adhesive that's currently on it. Should I try this method first or go straight to the freezer method? I've got all the GPU intesive tests for 3D Mark 2000 running in a loop right now, I can't run 2001 anymore hence the heatsink upgrade.
I'd try the hard running method first. Twisting it off would be safer than prying the gpu off by accident.
I'd store it in the freezer for 30mins and then twist it as pulling it can pull out the black thing covering the core as well and it will reveal the core and possibly damage your GPU.

I have a problem removing a pelitier from a heatsink, it's attached with a piece of thermal tape. I tried the freezer thing, no luck yet. I did the freezer thing to remove a heatsink from a chip before, but not with this thermal tape stuff.

Ok, I got it off, was running 3Dmark, and had the screwdriver (with electrical tape to insulate the end of it) prying at it gently. Other hand ofcourse was on the power button for the system. it popped off relatively easily. I was kinda surprized, it popped off and it took me a second to react. I was thinking to myself "That was pretty easy!". Then I glanced up, and noticed 3dmark was still running, and the vid card had no heatsink attached.
Hit the power button and all is good so far. Well, I still have to put the "new" HSF on it, but it was running when I shut it off...
/ me crosses fingers...
Now to clean this thing up and attach the more or less "new" HSF. I got it at a local computer shop that had a bin full of old heatsinks for sale. Because it didn't have a fan on it they gave it to me for free. :D That place has saved my a** so many times. let you guys know how things pan out.

Running method? I never tried that. Maybe if i run the peltier with no fan then in like 10 mins when the heatsink is hot to the touch I'll try to pry off the peltier.

What do you mean its not brave!?
Your hands would probably be shaking and your heart would be pumping.
You would obviously hesitate as the system is on.

Actually I had one of the weirdest stories.
I put my new video card in tried turning the system and it didn't get no power so as I took my video card out the system turned on immediatly I pulled the plug it resulted of a dead motherboard.

OHHHHH.... That sucks!!!:p
Sure does in the first place...
What was I doing wearing a fleece as it is a static clothing..
What was I doing playing with the motherboard with the power cord in.
The second time I did this with a new motherboard, I was very cautious.

:( I broke my peltier. :(
Did the razor blade along all four sideds, it finally popped free, but it has a few cracks on the bottom and one on the top. Now it doesn't work. O well, need to search ebay for another cheap one.

You've probably never owned a Voodoo. Taking the heasingk off off a Voodoo while it's running, is the equivlent to taking the HSF off of an athlon while it's running.

Well, heatsink is on. Hopefully this will help it run properly again. Oh yeah, found a new use for those AOL cd's! You can use them to mix ASII epoxy on them!
