View Full Version : Northwood Overclocking Results?

I'm looking into replacing my XP desktop with a Northwood. I can't use engineering samples from work, so I will have to buy a retail piece for myself. Before I drop some cash I'd like to see overclocking results if anybody has them. The reason is we heard some rumors that the stock pile of Northwoods was binned due to early .13u production problems. This seems to be why the 2.2's overclock slightly better, and the 2.0 seems to top out around 2.5ish under average conditions. We had some nice engineering samples that easily hit 2.8-2.9 but it looks like I'll have to buy a 2.2 to get close to that. I was hoping to save a little and get a 2.0, but it looks like they're binned. If anybody has a 2.2 I'd be interested in seeing your results. I'm ready to chuck this XP and delta fan out the window. Might save the 5 pounds worth of copper in the heatsink though :D

LOL I like the last line of "Chucking 5 pounds of copper out."

I don't believe many overclockers here have a job like you do where they test chips before release. The 2.2 I don't even think are being sold they are be pre-ordered.

Is your job like to overclock the chip and test them and get cash? If so I'm going for that job!

I believe you are right that the 2.0a are dropping out at the 2.5 mark as this was stolen from a signature:

P4 Northwood 2.0A @ 2.64GHz (1.775v)
Asus P4B-266 @ 528MHz FSB (4 x 132)
Kingmax 5.0ns PC2700 @ 352MHz (2 x 176)
Asus V8200 T2 Deluxe @ 220/500
Cheapo Thermaltake Volcano HSF w/ ASII

I'm a sys admin at a company that sells manufacturing equipment to Intel. Some of the people I work with get engineering samples, so I have a chance to tinker with them a little bit.

Yodums The guy I know well is an engineer who oversees develop of new equipment. He has regular meetings with Intel engineers to discuss what they would like to see in new equipment. If you want to get into that a masters in EE would probably help. He doesn't care that much about the chips - they're more like novelty items to him. He's more interested in the way things will be made 5 years down the road.

I kind of had that already in mind for University to study the fields of Elecitrcal Engineering, my brother recommended me that as well since he went through it and he said I'd be good with it but I had to try hard in math :D

TC, I remember reading a couple of review for the 2.0a and a couple for the 2.2 gig Northwoods. I did not bookmark them, sorry, but I'll try to retrace my steps and look for them again later. If I find them, I'll post the links. But it seems like the 2 gig ones were overclocking to about 2.5 and the 2.2 giggers were going 2.6 or a bit more. So, there might be truth in what you're saying about the "bin" theory. Seems like they were not using the best CPU coolers during those reviews though. Personally, I'd be happy with 2.5 gig from a 2.0a Northwood. Of course, if I could get even more out of it, I'd really be tickled pink.

They overclocked a 2.2 Northwood to 2618 MHz in this article (see below listed link).

http://www.hothardware.com/hh_files/CCAM/p4northwood.shtml

In this next article, they played with a 2.0a Northwood using an AVC Sunflower cooler (see below listed link). "While we did reach CPU clock speeds of over 2.6GHz, we found 2.52GHz to be extremely stable"

http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/cpus/intel/p4nw/

Well, that will maybe help get you going. I'll post more as I stumble across more.

Thanks for looking those up. I've seen one but not the other. A friend at work did tell me that Intel had binned their early production, but he didn't say anything about plants or dates. What was interesting to me was that he was running some samples at work around 2.9 with a copper cooler that was originally sent out with willys. The kicker is none of them had the heat spreader on them. I have no idea why they came without the IHS but it seemed to make a big difference.

Was the 2.2 running at 2.9 ?!

I'm guessing since they were ES chips they had no IHS IMHO, since the chips I saw on the benchmarks which were Northwood's had their IHS with engraved batch numbers etc.

Smack TC with that ad :D
Heck I'd bet he'd buy all 35 of them :p

The price looks pretty good. Is there a difference from Retail in OEM with the P4 Northwood's though as he is selling OEM chips.

Hopefully this guy actually has them in stock - I'm very impatient. Oh and there's no physical difference between oem and retail. Oem just means it doesn't come in a fancy shrink wrapped box, doesn't have the long warranty, and usually doesn't come with a heatsink. You get a better price though. Well I will post how this one does when I get it.

His feedback seem good enough.

Ah well on other chips OEM overclocked better than retail and stuff so I was really referring to that, since I know about the no heatsink thingy etc.

Good Luck with it.

That is CHEAP, my cost at my store is $550, I retail them for $650. maybe I need to speak to my Intel rep.
