I have a Canon S600 printer hooked up via USB to a machine running Windows 98. This machine is connected to a hub, which connects to my Windows XP machine.

The printer prints correctly and efficently from another Win98 machine in our house. My WinXP machine it takes two minutes for the "print" box to appear, and about five to get from the WinXP machine to the Win98 machine. The LED on the back of my NIC is constantly flashing the entire time.

I have Win98 drivers on the '98 machine and XP drivers on the XP machine. Could this cause a problem?

What do people think is a solution to my problem?

And yes, the XP machine eventually gets it to print on the '98 machine. It somehow gets there..... hmm...???

Thanks in advance.... :)

Thanks in advance.... :) I believe that's normal ..I only say that because mine does the same thing (It takes longer to print from the networked computer sometimes longer than others)This was true when I had win xp and win 98 networked and is still so with Win XP on both computers...

bump as I'd really like to see an answer to this.

When I try to print from a 98 machine to the XP machine (which the printer is connected to) I get the "printer out of paper" error.

Sounds a lot like what's happening with my problem.... I think I'll go check out Microsoft's knowledge base:beer: and see if I can dig anything up....

I have no problem printing with this same set up, except I have a lexmark. (I know they're crap but it was free!) I've also done this as quick fixes in other buildings with HP printers and it works fine.

Maybe it's just the cannon print drivers for xp? If it really bothers you I'd hook it up to the xp computer and see how fast it prints.

Also you might want to uninstall the the networking adapters and reinstall them on the win98 comp. Some times unexplained things happen in win98 that this fixes.

LOL, you guys are lucky, i have my printer connected to a 98 machine too, and when printing from either XP box, it always comes out black and white, so if i want color, i have to transfer the file to the 98 machine and print it from that one.

I read somewhere that if you turn off "printer spooling" That might help speed things up. Give it a try.
