I've heard a lot of talk on the forums about using tight memory settings like CAS 2. What exactly does this mean? What advantages are there to it? How do you do it?

CAS settings are found in the BIOS and can be changed there. The advantage is the lower latency time needed to access the memory and therefore, gives better bandwidth.

Once in the BIOS you will have, generally, two CAS options...2 and 3. Just change that setting to 2 and save. Reboot and you're done.

You probably won't be able to tell any real world differences between the two, but it is a performance gain nonetheless.

I looked through my BIOS and didn't see any CAS settings, I'm not suprised though I have a cheap ECS board. Do CAS settings pertain to RDRAM as well as DDR? And what exactly does CAS stand for? Sorry for all the questions but I've never heard of this before and I'd like to learn all I can about it.

Ah, sorry but know nothing of RDRAM. Not done much more than plug some memory in on a P4 system with RDRAM.

This question sure gets asked a lot! I asked it myself a year ago. What I found out then was that it was asked a lot, and if I'd read some current posts I'd have found the answer!!:p

Anyway here's the best page I know of to explain it, and more too. (http://www.corsairmicro.com/main/trg-cas.html) Good luck!
