Do I need third-party software to overclock my GeForce3 Ti-500? Or can I overclock (even if only a little) without additional software? If so, which settings do I need to adjust?

nope get Riva tuner or NVMAX to oc it....or coolbits wich lets you use the drivers options in the display panel to oc..

Well, I got NVmax and set the clock speeds to the max, but then I just got a bunch of moving colored lines covering the screen, and every time I rebooted, it would get to the desktop, and then immediately go to these colors covering the screen. I tried everything to get back to my desktop and the only way I could do it was to reset my CMOS using the jumper on my mobo. What did I do wrong? Set the speeds too high?

yes...only moveup in 10mhz increments...this is just like cpu ocing dotn go too high at first....the highest settings in NVMAX are DANGEROUS...you do not want to kill your card.....

DON'T EVER DO THAT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When OCing you always do it in small increments up a couple notches /test/ up a couple more /test/ up a couple more /test /screen freezes/ drop a couple notches/ test/ if all is well leave it there.....:) OOPS funnyperson got here first...:D

Try Rivatuner, it has a test before accepting new settings. If there is a problem it will revert to defaults.

Well, I just used the registry hack to replace the additional tab entitled "Clock Frequencies" to the properties window of the card. It also has a "Test" feature.

Where did you find said registry hack?

And how can you overclock a card so that it doesn't make your screen flicker when you boot up and it applies the new settings? Is there some way to schitz the BIOS of the video card to run at that speed, or do I have to deal with the flicker?

Here it is:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NvTweak]
"CoolBits"=dword:00000003

You just copy and paste that into a text file and save it as "coolbits.reg", then enter it into the registry.
