I was just wondering if it was just me or if this is with others too. My Win XP was running great and stable. I then got my Audigy Platinum soundcard, and all hell broke loose. My soundcard would crackle when listening to MusicMatch Jukebox. The next day I had a "stop error" and could not get into Windows at all. I mean that I could not boot into safe mode or restore my system with "last known good configuration". I was forced to reformat. I did so with Windows ME to see if the Soundcard produced any problems. It did not and my system works great. Has anyone else had any problems with Soundblaster Audigy and Windows XP?

there are some major "issues" with the audigy xp drivers
sometimes my sound cuts out on me in xp but i just restart and it fixes it, the most recent drivers have caused the audigy to cut out less often, lol but it still does it.
get some newer drivers and see if they work for you

The trick is is to install the card with only the drivers and NO other SB software untill SB comes out with a fix.

Use my method of installing the drives don't install Audio HQ or Surround Mixer..

Just pure drivers, what about the Via 4in1's?

Well, I am going to set up a dual boot system with a Hard Drive selector. I love WinXP, but it is unfortunate that Microsoft cannot put out a OS and have it work successfully with the latest hardware. So, I will use WinME for sound and games and use WinXP for everything else. I was hoping that there would be more of you out there with WinXP and Audigy that could shed some light on this. Oh well....

I said screw it, and went back to Windows 98. It just wasn't worth the hassle. Too much autonomy, and not enough hardware support. But I do miss the stability.

I noted I had bad problems listening to MP3s while buring a CD in XP, with the exact same rig that I had no problems with in 98. So until M$ can get their crap together, I'll stick with ol' faithful.

I had an Audigy with WinXP & just could`nt resolve all the probs. I was getting (crackling. popping etc) so I changed to the Santa Cruz. VideoLogic Sonicfury. A bit better but to be honest its not perfect yet???

Did not have issues using Win98SE

actually the first time i installed my audigy i was getting horrible crackling problems. So i updated the drivers and all problems were fixed. Did cha install the drivers from the cd? If so which one? There 2 versions of the driver on the cd. But your best bet would be to dl the new one from SB site.

I have installed the ADGXPDrvUpdate on the website plus installed the Driver from CD and nothing helped. What two drivers are there? I ever only have one choice. What are the names of them and where can I find them?

look on the install cd, and there should be a folder: audio/english/drivers then select your os and there you sound find the driver files. For Xp it would be wdma_emu.inf i do believe if your installing it manually. So the driver i have installed now is wdmaud.drv. Xp should automatically install the card anyways, but try deleting the installed drivers and let it autoinstall, or try manually installing the one from the install cd.

Just went back and found my old post about my similar problem: http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41114

Thanks, I am going to install WinXP next week when my Hard Drive selector comes in, and then I will try it again. I still have WinME on my other Hard Drive, so I can play all my games and listen to my MP3's on that Hard Drive and do my business on the WinXP Hard Drive. I appreciate the input, the more the better as I want this to work with WinXP.

I think it has a lot to do with the chipset, more than the OS. I had the VIA chipset, and was having horrible poblems, that I just coudn't resolve. And that was in WINME.

I now have WINXP PRO, and have a little bit more knowledge on updating the drivers and that sort of thing, so I should be buying one soon.

Just Curious, but what is a "Hard Drive Selector"?

Sounds interesting.

Same thing here. had it ever since i got this computer, and never had an issue. Acually, a funny story, when i fist got my computer all together, and had windows installed, i spent like 30 minute trying ot figure out why the f*ck the sound wouldn't work. i was about to turn off the computer and reseat the card, when the idea hit me to turn the volume up a bit louder. problem solved.

I've used the Audigy under XP and Linux, and in both cases it works great.

:::BTW:::
Richard how did you get the Audigy to work in Linux?...ive got the "drivers" compiled and installed but no go?

If you're referencing the sourceforge drivers, the installation script should have taken care of everything for you.

Once everything is compiled and installed, you may have to edit your /etc/modules.conf file. Or if you're in debian your /etc/modutils/arch/i386 file. (Or whichever arch you're running.)

Add the line that is mentioned in the readme.

Once that is done you can modprobe emu10k1 and it should fire up.

Do a cursory check to make sure that file permissions are set approriately for /dev/dsp* and /dev/mixer*

If you don't have an audio group you can just just permission for those devices like so.

chmod a+rw /dev/dsp*
chmod a+rw /dev/mixer*

Then relogin and you're in business.

Had crackling sound with my Audigy, turned out my 2x120gb8mb WD's in raid0 overloaded the Via PCI-bus. The only thing that helped was a Latency Patch from this guy:
http://www.networking.tzo.com/net/software/
File:
http://www.networking.tzo.com/net/software/dl03.asp?FILE=vlatency_v020_beta4_057301.zip

Use at own risk, my sisoft filescore dropped from 49000 to 46500 but everything works fine now.

This (old) article gave me a clue:
http://www.tecchannel.de/hardware/817/index.html

I had the same problems with SB live and with both XP and ME.

Maybe I can help some of the less educated souls here. Not sure if any of you ever had the misfortune of using VIA's KT266 chipset in any of your boards but this chipset had known issues with Sound Blaster Live! cards. The problem occurs because the IRQ settings in the bios are altered and custom by Windows as Windows pleases. Most of the time this doesn't cause a problem, as it is something Windows has built into it for its own purposes, but in the case of the KT266 it DID cause major issues. The problem was that sometimes IRQ's that are shared are shared by 2 devices that need them at the same time. Windows is SUPPOSED TO work around this....in the case of a Sound Blaster Live card used with certain network cards (this is just ONE of MANY examples) it didn't work right, and when the two fought over the IRQ being shared (I think it was IRQ 11 that liked to be a ******* about it) the network card inevitably won and killed the SBLive card, thus causing lock-ups (along with a beautiful 130db+ screeching sound over your speakers, and when neither won, but still fought, it could do things like snap, crackle and pop or no sound at all, or sometimes the driver would fail at random during a game....VIA's KT333 chipset also occasionally does the same thing...I know because I've owned both chipsets. The problem is that SBLive (and the likes) cards don't like to share IRQ's and also that quite frankly sometimes Windows is just stupid about what IRQ's it "re"assigns. I believe (I may be wrong) that WinXP follows suit with the BIOS on IRQ's...I don't remember for sure, but either way, if you are running into this issue, best bet is to try to rearrange you cards and make sure that the SBcard doesn't share IRQ's with any constantly active cards, such as a networking card and definately not with the AGP slot (if that's even possible..I think it is)...the only issue you run into here is this: there is some formula (who knows with Microspank) that is used when rearranging the IRQ's when windows loads where the SB card might share an IRQ with say your modem in the **BIOS**, but once Windows has a chance to screw it up, it now shares and IRQ with your NIC. Try it out, if it doesn't work, bang your head repeatedly against the wall....it only hurts until your dead.

well, in my case thats the first thing i tried. Removing other pci-cards so that i could test the SB Audigy in all the PCI-slots.
Of course, some of them should always be avoided, like the ones sharing resources with Raid, AGP and USB (see manual).
Then i made sure both in bios boot info and in windows that there was no IRQ-sharing or resource conflicts.

Hey Clarpet ! Did the Top blow-hole Exhaust-fan make any difference to cabinet temp?

lol, a few posts on here....I updated my drivers to the latest version and no probs now, all fine...but I am only using it as a standard sound card and havent tried any advanced features such as digital recording etc. Thankfully its on an i850e based system, after hearing the probs on via chipsets I wont be using it on my KT333........

Actually, I don't have this setup built yet. I'm in the process of building this kick @$$ P4 system, and I'll let you know how it goes.....look for my post about my complete system in the near future. But, in my experience, the top-exhaust blow hole, if using a decently-fast 80mm fan, is that it can lower the over-all case temp by around 4 degrees F, not bad at all. But I've also had a guy tell my his CPU droped by something like 4 or 5 degrees alone!!! That's pretty impressive. The best results seem to be when the fan is mounted OUTSIDE the case, as a good sized 80mm fan only takes up space an collects heat around the back of the 5 1/4 drives. I also will be cutting a hole directly underneath the CPU socket on the underside of the Mobo and mounting an 80mm or maybe even !!!120mm!!! fan on the outside...I'm thinking this will probably be more effective as an intake....maybe I'll even mount a small heat sink down there if possible....I can't believe no one has tried this before....

You guys may want to take a look at this post over @ anandtech as well as the links contained within. This is what I was talking about. This is something I considered when installing WinXP because I was lucky enough to already know about this at the time.
