I finally decided to get a cd burner, and id like to know what brands you guys think are best. Im looking at something in the 12x to 16x range, something i can get for around 60 bucks on ebay, cause im cheap. Iv been looking at plextor and TDK drives, any other recommendations, or doesnt it really matter.
Plextor is the industry standard for which other companies are measured against, many will agree that they are the best of the best, TDK also makes a great drive.. (i own one myself) and i also hear that Aopen makes a good drive as well..i hope this helps :)

Plextor, TDK, or Yamaha. But they all come at a premium price. The one AOPen drive I own is currently being repaired/replaced (bad experiences with this drive). Although I've only had one Aopen drive I've heard of many other people having problems with these drives ( in various forums).
For like top of the line quality I'd say Plextor, TDK or Lite-On you cant go wrong with any of those but they are pricey.
Although try to find a Plextor 12x Burn Proof.

Cheap eh? I've got an Acer that's never failed me. Should be able to find one of those for next to nothing.
The others mentioned will do the trick too though...if you can find them that cheap.

I think i can get a 12x off eBay for around 50 or 60, theres a TDK ending tonight that im going to try to get, il let you know if i do and how much.
I second the Plextors (1), TDK and Yamahas (2). If you're looking for cheap, the LG's work relatively well. I'm not crazy about Sony, but the one I've got (16/10/40) works great.

I have a new rule in my life. I NEVER BUY USED PC PARTS ON EBAY! ( 2 bad experiences and I still have the marks on my behind from kicking it ) In most cases you can buy the item new from a reseller for just about what you pay on ebay. Please benefit from my hindsight.
The Lite-On burners are only $ 85.00 all over the web and for being cheap they get great reviews. I installed one for a friends daughter over Christmas and it works great.
Thats just my opinion , Billy

Plextor would be my Burner of choice. The 24x model is so cheap right now on newegg!
My Memorex burner is a bit slow for a 12x - but its OK. I know someone with a TDK 121032 and it is REALLY fast.

Plextor maybe the industry leader, however Lite-on seems to be getting much better reviews. :D

Well iv never had a bad experience on ebay, and i usually can get some good deals. Of course if its not much savings il just get one from a retailer.
Im thinking about a lite-on 24x10x40, there only 82 on newegg.

Hmm I heard lots of things about Newegg being a bad online store.
On the other hand the burner seems to be looking great.

just ordered a PIII 1 gig from newegg....no problems.
I've ordered a few other things from them as well...but nothing within the last year or so.
I just remember crossing a thread where it said Newegg was a bad online store and I read and I saw them killing every product shipped to him and he had to RMA everything and the postage must have been brutal.
*Shrug*
I guess it was bad luck then.

Hmm I doubt it as he ordered basically 1/4 of a system; motherboard, cpu, ram and video card and everything arrived DOA.
