View Full Version : DirectX Question
Can DirectX 8 be uninstalled and then reinstalled?
I don't know if that would even help, but I'm having a problem with a couple of things.
When I try to run 3DMark 2001 I get an error saying "3DMark2001 requires a DirectX 8 compatible 3D accelerator."
And then when I tried a screen saver from Microsoft, I got "Could not find any compatible Direct3D devices."
Everything else works fine except those two.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
I ran DXDiag and attached the results.
Thanks!

no, you cant officially uninstall it, there is a program that will do it, but i havent tried it. What i woud do is reinstall video drivers and DX.

Try Directx Buster (http://www.directxbuster.de/index_e.html) and then reinstall it. I guess this is "Do at your own risk"
This has happened to me a couple of times while pushing the fsb real hard. A reinstall of direct x should cure it.
Thanks guys, I'll try to do that. :)

Yeah, I've seen many bad things come froma DirectX uninstall with that program, but it's really one of the only programs that does it. A reinstall might fix it. Let us know if you need more help :)
i cant remember the name of the program i tried once to remove the directx but im sure it was this in the question. i got the link for it in the geforcefaq and tried all the process just like it was recommended to be done but got no sucess in the end. i was trying to remove the directx 8 and install the 7. its not a complicated process but its highly unsafe.
Hi all,
Well the DXBuster said it wasn't compatible with Windows XP, so I didn't install it.
I did try reinstalling 8.1 again, but it doesn't look like it helped any.
There has only been the 2 programs that had any problems, so I guess I'll just let it ride until some bigger problem comes along. I downloaded 3DMark2000 v1.1 and it works fine, so now I can see what my scores are, and that was the big hang-up that I had about DX8 not working right.
Not to say that I don't want to correct this, but my past history has shown that I tend to reformat more often then average, which is not necessarily by choice, so chances are I'll be correcting the problem at that time. :D
I am trying to get out of that pattern though, so if you do have some more ideas, I would appreciate the help.
Thanks again!
