Welcome to the Forums...
Goto start menu>run>type in regedit... go to hkey local machine>software>microsoft>windows>currentversion... Look for run, runonce,etc... there is about 4-6 different run-whatevers... look in each one for the program you want to stop from starting up...:D

Hello and welcome to the forums.
Easier yet is go to start/run/msconfig/startup and pick what you want to load at startup.
Regcleaner is also a great program. Make sure to read how to use it and restore backups if you delete something you didn't want to.
Hope that helps, Billy

Welcome to the forum!
I think i would go with Billvill's advise on this one. :)
When you disable stuff using msconfig you get a new item at the start menu called Disabled Startup Items. Is this what you were trying to avoid too? I dont see a problem why a simple delete wouldnt work. Right click on the taskbar & pick properties then choose the start menu programs & then choose remove... then open up start up items & delete what ever you don't need.
I like RegCleaner best which you can pick up at where Takiwa said.
Or you can go to run and type is MSCONFIG.
And disable unecessary programs from there.
