My uncle moved to a place where he can no longer get cable or dsl internet. His options are to either get a satellite or something though verizon wireless. He wants to have multiple computers so the verizon thing sounds pretty much out. I was wondering if any of you have satellite internet or if you can recommend a provider. Thanks.

You can get a router ,with a usb port for a wireless receiver, but with wireless/sattelite, you have very limited download amounts.

My friend use to have satellite internet. He hated it. It was quite expensive for really bad speeds. He couldn't even game the lag was so bad. And it went out with just a few clouds in the sky. This was only a year or so ago but YMMV.

Do not ever get it.
Unless you want to pay 80 dollars a month. for 425 megabytes a day. Dont do it. between my sister and I. were exceeded it every day. and after that 24 hours until you can even use your interet again. after you exceed 425 mb you are allowed 2kbps download. and your latency is around 900-2000. SO kill your self.

Sprint Wireless
This (http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/kr2-router/) is what I use.
It has a PCMCIA slot, Express card slot and 3 USB ports. It supports EVDO rev A and HSDPA high speed networks. Only 10/100 LAN, but has wireless N as well. It works great.

I had wildblue internet for a year befor my local cable company could hook us up. It was a nightmare I would like to forget. Do yourself a favor, get an extra phone line and pay for dial up. It's actually better.

satellite = LARGE latency
mobile / cell phone "wireless" type internet = still big latency but better than satellite!
a comment posted above is the best idea so far, getting a router such as a Draytek, that has a USB port so that you can stick the usb dongle the cell provider provides into, that way you can put the ip address they assign on the draytek (something like 10.x.x.x, may even be another private), and then NAT yourself out.
they shouldnt be blocking ports of firewalling the private ip they assign.

I was playing around with tethering my Centro the other night and was pulling 70 - 110 kb/s with only 125 latency. My DSL got a latency of 70 off the same site.

Well that's with 1 - 3 bars, haven't had a chance to break out the laptop and test some where I get full service. Gotta love technology though.

Ditto. I was without cable for a month and tethered my Mogul with EVDO rev A. I got killer speeds with around 70-200ms latency. Downloads hovered around 150KB/s, def not bad. I could surf ocforums without much load time.

but thats not latency. that is transfer speed.
you can have 100mb connection. but if the latency is crap, dont plan on playing games over it.
does that make sense?

Thanks for your input guys. They are going to get a verizon wireless card and see how it goes. I don't think they get the EVDO network in their area, but I guess we will see.

Hang on, mobile broadband cards and services have a severe limitation on maximum data transfer. It caps out on most services (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint off the top of my head) at 5GB a month up to 50gb on the best possible services available.
If he's doing light web browsing, email, bills etc online its a good choice, but awful if you plan on downloading media or doing any kind of gaming.

Yup I have the PPC6800. I just hate WM stability at times compared to my treo 755.

If hes on satellite he wont be doing any gaming for sure due to latency. And I think someone also pointed out they cap you on sat also. Neither connection is a replacement for cable or dsl, its just picking the lesser of 2 evils.
My EVDO plan is unlimited. It was a "promotional" deal and I signed a 2 year contract. Not sure what I'll do after that expires, then it turns into a $65 x 1st GB and $10/GB deal after that. Who knows what'll happen to pricing plans over the next year though.
The limits on satellite internet are even more severe than wireless from what I've seen.
We're not talking about the best internet by any means. It's just the better of the 2, if that's all you have to choose from.
