View Full Version : Anyone have any GOOD experiences with cheap ram?
Mostly I'm referring to overclocking ability. I know that for the most part cheap ram will not likely overclock as well as something like crucial, but I'm still curious as to individual experiences.
Have some SimpleTech PC133 CAS3 that does 150 CAS2 no problem. have 2 x 256MB sticks of it running in my backup file server (ECS D6VAA dual PIII 1GHz). Got it at Sam's Club.
Does have Micron chips so it's not completely generic.

I have generic PC133 @cas2 in my setup...has given me zero problems BUT...since I run a celly @115 FSB that is why I've gotten away with it. If I was going for 133FSB I'd definitely be more picky.

Just remember that you get what you pay for
True enough Trancebear... I'll just have to try its limits and see.

Wel obviously cheap ram performs to a lesser performance (hmm is that proper grammar - pfft i dont care) than expensive ram (quite obvious). I mean surely the extra $/£ for that nice Crucial - there must be SOME difference?
I've got a 128mb stick of "Wintec Industries" 133mhz thats rated for 133 @ cas 3 and it's doing 140mhz @ cas 2 I've also got a noname stick of 133mhz rated cas 2 in my main machine. At least one of those two doesn't like 146mhz at any cas. I've got a stick of noname 100mhz thats rated cas 3 and it's doing 124mhz @ cas 2 in my K6-2, now that's a good gain. Too bad my 133 won't take a similar % increase.

All the memory I have is cheapo Micron: can you say $15 for 128 mb? How about $60 for 512?
I have it running at various speeds in different rigs, but one is @150 fsb, another is @ 140 (or so.)
On the other hand, 2 of the sticks of pc133 I have refuse to go past 133, period.
Cheap memory is a crapshoot: sometimes you get lucky, other times not.

I've had some no name generic stuff I've bought at computer shows do moderately well and some do not so well. Just the luck of the draw with generic stuff. My Dad has a 256mb stick of goldstar pc133 doing 150 fsb on a chainteck board with a P3 733.
Like Trancebear said, you get what you pay for, you may be surprised and get lucky but don't buy it expecting much.

Before I switched to Crucial DDR I had a 256 stick PC100 Kingston Value Ram that I paid $20 for doing 155FSB on my ASUS A7A266:)
I have only been able to get the Crucial to 151FSB though:(
