I've taken the plunge and bought an AMD duron 800. Started with something cheap so I could learn the ins and outs of overclocking an AMD.

The motherboard is a M7VKD KT133A chipset

My first attempt so far is to FSB overclock it, but if I bump the fsb up to even 102 mhz, I get nothing. won't boot until I clear the cmos and start over (at 100fsb)

I'm running an Alpha HSF that has given me quite a lot of good results for all my intel needs, hopefully it'll be a good start.

any suggestions?

Good CPU for the money. I've heard that they don't need to be unlocked to oc the fsb. I had unlocked mine before I ever tried, so I don't know. I had a 750 that I was running in a Soyo board, the clock mutiplier was set by a dip switch. It wouldn't boot at 800, but it would at 850! The bus speed was set in the BIOS, and I could modestly overclock it by setting it to 104/34. It had the kt133 chipset, so you couldn't go too high. I don't have any specific recommendations, other than double check everything. How's your power supply?

I don't know the mobo so I am not sure how you adjust the fsb - dip switch or bios?
Seems strange though. Perhaps you have a problem with your power supply. Have you had any problems on ordinary POST at 800?
Some details of the system using a signature at the bottom will help.
