Just putting one together with spare parts as I research which parts/components are best. I had available two processor's which both are hot running so there no where near my final solution.

I have available a P4 530
http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL7KK

and a Pentium D 820
http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL88T

Which processor would best be used in the environment I plan on testing it with? IE video encoding. 1080P playback

encoding? PentiumD 820 for sure (dual core!). 1080p playback, neither of them will be enough, but just a $50 or less video card should be able to take care that. also, do watch out for the heat issue too as none of them are known to be running cool!

I would try an get a e2200 or similar. It would run cool and isn't that expensive. The Pent D 820 will not play back 1080p.

Ok I'm a little confused. The e2200 is a 2.2Ghz 1mb L2 cache CPU and the 820 is a 2.8GHz 2mb L2 cache PSU, yet the 820 won't play 1080 yet the e2200 can.

Not to mention that the Pentium D series run HOT and VERY power hungry at the wall!

You'd save money over the next few months getting a more power, and lower power consuming processor.

Indeed! I went ahead and updated my main rig with a processor sold on the forums and moved my 6300 to the htpc.
